The Heavy Duty Character in GI JOE. We are going with what was the RoadBlock character (heavy machine gunner) but Hasbro lost the rights to that name. so they are calling him Heavy Duty.
Not sure why, there is already a Joe named Heavy Duty. Its confusing, but anyway, here is the design. http://ratkins.deviantart.com/art/RoadBlock-94599765 Wylde Weezle: That's too bad about the name loss...they couldn't tag him with a rank in front of his name like SGT Flash or SSG Rock n Roll ?
Oh well...so long as he looks like Roadblock and goes by the name "Marvin" I guess this is the new Heavy Duty for this continuity.
Back OT, I love the look they're going for melding a bit of classic with modern military gear. Overall I'm liking these designs. Pit Viper: I don't see how Hasbro managed to lose the rights to the Roadblock name again. They have ACTION FIGURES ON THE SHELF AS WE SPEAK WITH THE ROADBLOCK NAME! Stupid crap like this will keep me from reading/buying the comic. With that said, it looks like ROADBLOCK is wearing his Battle Corps gear. flywheels: Why am I getting a Terry Dodson vibe when looking at his sketch of Scarlett? (a good thing by the way!) xFlintx: They've always called the characters their proper names in print no matter what the toys were called. Hopefully Roadblock is still Roadblock. delta: What is with all the Frankenstein shoes on all the Joes? Look like Goth kid shoes. Crimson Rage: Well I'm impressed.
Odd about the 'Heavy Duty' thing, but I reckon Larry Hama will get round it somehow. General Hawk was still General Hawk in the DDP series, even though they gave him the "Tomahawk" name in early issues. sn8ke3y3s: Can anyone say woody! IDW knows the love that we the fans love these characters and so far they are doing everything right with this beloved franchise... In my opinion. sn8ke3y3s: I managed to find this just a few minutes ago. I saw the uncolored version- so heeeeeeere's the colored one! BigErn: Quote:

I'm really liking these designs, and that was a nice little explanation on the Roadblock/Heavy Duty mess. I agree with what some others have said, we can buy plastic Roadblock but not paper Roadblock? Strange. G.I. Smurf: first, these look great. i was worried that we would get some transformers art, but this is top notch.
2nd, im gld their using roadblock, even if they have to call him heavy duty. also nice to see him in the toon.
3rd, im glad storm shadow is bad. i never, ever used him as a god guy. he fits so much better as a cobra, and this way snake eyes, spirit and hopefully QK will have someone to fight. manic mailman: when is the first issue supposed to hit the stands? fierce krypton: LoL I agree with Delta on the shoes. Other than that sweet all round. Looks like snake Eyes is a lil bulky... umanumanamo: I can't believe people were worried about the art chores on this title. When the Jonboy Meyers cover came out, people assumed that it would be the same as the interior art, although a little reading would have indicated otherwise. As soon as I saw Robert Atkins was attached to this, I looked him up and was impressed.
Can't wait! jamarmiller: Im not buying the book as Im not interested in a retelling/ alternate take/reboot of a story that I already have and read but R Atkins is by far the best person they could have gotten on this title I love his work jamarmiller: Quote:

| Agreed. I have faith in Hama, I don't think he will let us down. Storm Shadow has so much depth, and is one of the most well crafted characters in the joeverse. Not many characters who start out as Cobra end up like him, with an intricate, interweaving storyline. Derek2783: So they didn't replace Roadblock with Heavy Duty... they're just calling Roadblock by the name Heavy Duty.
I think I'm twerked off even more now, actually.
How does H lose the rights to the name "Roadblock"? There can't possibly another character with the name Roadblock? I mean, it's kind of a dumb name to begin with, but we love it cause we grew up with it. Who else would want it? Shin Densetsu: Quote: |

| Sometimes companies such as Lanard will get the rights to a name which blocks Hasbro from using it, thats why Hasbro has to renew the rights to use the names every few years. SNAKE EYES: It's hard to believe they lost the name, we just had a Roadblock figure released in wave 8 a few months ago. I mean the comic was probably being planned and written back when the figure was being released. I find it hard to believe they lost the name in that short of a time frame.
I just think they want to put Heavy Duty more into the spot light because of him being the choice they went with for the movie. artiepants: where did the rights issue come up? i thought the story from Chris Ryall back when it was announced was that it was Heavy Duty to more match up with the movie cast (Hawk, Duke, Snake-Eyes, Scarlet, Heavy Duty) only missing Breaker...
in fact, i highly doubt it's a rights issue, even when they've had to modify a name for the toy trademark (GIJoe Hawk, Sgt. Breaker. Double Clutch) they've used the regular name in the comics.
I think i'd be a lot more interested in this if it spun out of Resolute; as it is we have 3 (THREE!!!) new versions of GIJoe next year, that seems kind of needlessly confusing... Counterpoint: Quote:

And Now I Know... SnakeEyes: Confusing? Yes, definately. But, fun nonetheless to see GIJOE coming back!! Imperial_Serpentor: yeah... I'm guessing Atkins might have had a filtered story here... I doubt Hasbro doesn't hold that trademark right now.
It's probably so when the movie hits and people start reading the comic they arn't like "wow, this is nothing like the movie... it sucks! the people who wrote the comic don't even know the big black dude is called Heavy Duty... and what's this crap about him being a gourmet chef?" rqatkins: First off, thanks for the comments. I take alot of this in when it comes to suggestions. heh I'll be the first to admit those boots on some of the designs were alittle large. Being well into pages I must say there are no Frankenstein boots to worry about.
About Roadblock, I dont know first hand why the need for a name change. But it was discussed between the editors and myself, and the Roadblock character will be called Heavy Duty in the Joe books.
This isnt to match up with the movie, because there will be a movie adaptation book, but the main series called for the HMG character and I was told to base the designs off of Roadblock. I dont have the full scoop and there has been alot of speculation over the matter.
But what I have heard is that Hasbro had unintentionally allowed the rights to the name Roadblock to expire. I dont know if this was pre-movie production and they are under the same restrictions as the comic, or if for some reason the current toys that have already been produced and distributed are exempt from the name change.
I do know for a fact that the character we'll see in the upcoming Joe main title will be the Roadblock character, but refered to as Heavy Duty.
I dont know what that means for the existing Heavy Duty character. I assume he wont be used, atleast not in the comics. Quantumus Prime: Thanks for the input dude. You're designs are perfect! Thanks for sharing. | All times are GMT -4. The time now is 09:40 AM. | |
