H.I.S.S. Tank boards member Paco attended IDW’s G.I. Joe panel today at NYCC, and reported the following:
Here are some Notes in random order:
1. It’s a team effort between G.I.Joe, G.I.Joe: Cobra, & G.I.Joe: Origins comics to reinvent the line. Larry is excited since he loves the characters, but is enjoying putting them a in situation to start. They made it clear (except for Dial-Tone) they intend to keep the core of the characters the same.
2. Female Dial-Tone was supposed to be a new character until Hasbro suggested the team had too many experts in that field. The art was done so the names her Dial-Tone.
3. G.I.Joe: Origins ends where G.I.Joe & G.I.Joe: Cobra begin.
4. They are going to be doing Spotlight one-shots on certain characters. So far we are getting Beach Head, Helix (new character they couldn’t discuss), and looking into The Baroness (who is getting alot of love. They willl be using this as they do with Transformers to fill plots of the main line. Characters are based on telling a story worth telling. Many character stories were proposed by the staff, but many are characters we aren’t going to see yet.
5. Larry’s favorite is Snakes-Eyes. He said can write a whole story without words and get paid full price. He just submitted layouts for a Spotlight story for him.
6. We are getting four movie based comics leading up to the movie.
7. Ray Park is co-writing a Snake-Eyes story based on the movie.
8. Serpentor hasn’t been discussed. If they do use him he will most likely be reimagined since as Larry stated “you need to suspend alot of disbelief.”
9. G.I.Joe: Cobra is based on Chuckles and the team has alot of love for him. They stated to keep an eye on all the characters since you will be surprised on who turns up.
10. They are putting out children’s book/comic based on Combat Heros.
11. I asked about other groups besides Cobra and was told to read Origins.

That is really cool Paco, any news on the comics is good news to me. I think IDW has went off the hook with this reboot. It's everything I expected and more.

I hope we see a Storm Shadow spotlight, I'd expecially be impressed if Larry Hama drew it. I like his artwork, I don't think it gets enough recognition.

I assume you mean Ray Park (The actor that plays him in the movie) and Not Ray Parker Jr. (the guy that did the Ghostbusters theme)
Zarana says
I would enjoy either.

well... it makes some sense - and makes me feel simultaneously better about the comic and much worse about the toy line - that the people who made 'the Dial-Tone is a broad now' blunder appears to have been Hasbro and not the writers. so, how much sway does Hasbro have with this book, anyway? if i were writing a comic, and some douchebag-in-a-suit told me that i should change something that seems arbitrary and stupid, i think i'd tell him to stick it.
