G.I. Joe #4 Review
This issue has variant covers featuring Destro, and one cover with Tunnel Rat & Scarlett.
Another note, Destro is shown in costume and mask on the regular, and a variant cover, however he shows up in neither during the issue.
The Baroness and Destro continue their duel, with subtle textures and effects implemented throughout this entire sequence. Nothing distracting, and the panel design along with dynamic viewpoints enhance the sense of intensity between the two opponents.
The joes continue to struggle with Destro’s Trojan horse devices. On page 8, as one of them is disabled, the view switches to it’s monitor. As it is disabled, the background of the entire page fades to black. This was a neat decision that helped emphasize the deactivation, or destruction of the unit.
More fan-favorite joes are introduced in this issue, one of them being Tunnel Rat. He doesn’t just show up in this issue, he plays an important part. He is one of the few joes able to fit into tight spaces and dark places. He is needed to track down the last of Destro’s devices in the PIT.
The introduction of the new joes has been done well in this series so far. They don’t just show up to add another face to the roster; they each serve a purpose. Tunnel Rat is not the only new joe to make an appearance….
Before Tunnel Rat and Scarlett(the only other joe thin enough to come along) depart for the last device, we finally learn more about the tension between her and Duke. Humor is added to the mix courtesy of the other joes, which is good as it shows a more light-hearted side to them.
Tunnel Rat fans will like this issue, as Tunnel Rat shows his expertise, maneuvering in and out of tight spots in the PIT, and guiding Scarlett. Tunnel Rat is definitely in his element in this issue. I wasn’t expecting him to show up this soon, but I’m glad he did.
Another joe shows up right on time, while battling Destro’s devices elsewhere in the PIT. Barbecue comes flying out of nowhere with his axe. His entrance is timed well, it was a shock to see him dive from mid-air.
As things start taking a turn for the worst, we see Duke and Beachhead team up to face the unknown. Since these 2 have been paired together since the 1st issue, I have a feeling they will be the prominent duo in this series. Duke being the reckless, laid back soldier, while Beachhead being rigid and reluctant. With that said, I hope each issue will take turns focusing on different members of the team. It was great seeing a focus on Tunnel Rat in the issue, but the issue went back to Duke and Beachhead towards the end.

I saw Duke and Beachhead being opposite personality-wise from what you see.
I see Beachhead being more reckless and Duke the more rigid one.

Just got my copy today. Love the cameos of Bazooka, Crank Case, and Rock 'n' Roll. I also thought I saw Gung Ho in there as well. Overall, I thought it was a good issue.

I love Chuck Dixon's writing, but my only complaint is that IDW is stretching this story out too long.
The old Marvel series #3 had this same story wrapped up in one, while IDW and Hasbro push Mr. Dixon to make this the first arc for trade paperback publication.

I loved all the cameos in this issue. The Barbeque scene I think is a nod to Marvel's issue 40 (not sure when he axed a Hiss Driver on Cobra Island). Only thing is why does BBQ look like Zap? Actually I'm really getting annoyed by not using full codenames, 'Beach', 'Rat', 'Scars'. Next thing you knew Baroness will be 'Bar', Destro will be 'Des' and Hawk will be 'Ha'. Come on!

There is not a comic shop anywhere near my home.
This stinks. I have to get these soon. I miss GI Joe comics.
