My love of G.I. Joe is only rivaled by my love of Lego. The Kreo line has been a huge hit in my house. My son recently suggested to me that I recreate all of the Marvel Comic covers in blocks. Challenge Accepted.
I decided to do 12 at a time. This will be an easy pace to work at and, hopefully, will mean than more characters are available by the time I need them!
Not all of the characters on these covers are currently officially available. You will notice custom versions of Breaker, Steeler and Zap. I also had to make the entire original October Guard. I’m sad about the hat that I used for Col. Brekhov, but it was the closest thing I had. Cover 12 required a Gung-Ho, who will be available by Christmas (I hope he is- that guy is on a lot of covers…) I actually was able to create a custom Gung-Ho digitally by combining various photos of Lego and Kreo parts.
I did a lot of building for this project. I made a full size (to a minifig) Mobat, Polar Bear and a Sea L.E.G.s. They are staying together. All of the other props will come apart.
The covers are really mosaics of images of blocks rather than fully built scenes that I photographed. This allowed me to use a combination of microscale and full scale elements. Every image on these covers is a block. Even the background colors on the images are blown up pictures of Lego blocks. The vapor trails behind Stalker’s jet pack and the plane on cover #12 are cropped photos of Lego Rubber bands.
I really enjoyed doing some of the details like the gunfire and explosions, and water spray. Those were all built at a large scale and then shrunk down to fit their role on the covers. The neat part is that I can save all these effects and use them on future covers if they come up again.
One weird aspect of this project was the body proportions of the Kreo figures. I wanted to copy the originals as well as possible, but the figure are so short and wide that it was almost impossible. I cheated by making my covers slightly wider to allow for the widths of the characters. I also had to do some creative image manipulation to get certain poses.
I do a lot of stop motion films with Lego and this was a nice change of pace. It was fun to make this series of static images.
I think #2 and #8 are my favorite.
This first batch of covers was done in 5 days. It was about 50 hours of work. I’ve already checked; I have everything I need to do the next 12 covers. I just need to clean up the mess from this batch first….
I hope you all enjoy these images!
Larry.

Love this even the typo on issue 10, which is overshadowed by the greatness of everything else. Is that a bionicle on issue 3?
love it. The SEA legs are amazing! now only 145 issues to go.

Thanks for pointing out the typo. I'll fix it. I don't know how I didn't catch that…

Hmmm... If this wasn't directly copied, it's an amazing coincidence. M6D was the first one to do this, and some of his stuff is already a year old. Not saying you ripped him off, but if you were inspired by him, a nice tip of the hat would be the decent thing to do so no one thinks this is plagiarism. Or if this was organically created by you, as I said, it's an amazing coincidence.

The sea legs is fun. It is 36 cm tall. There is another picture of it here: Brick a Brack Studios | Quality LEGO movies filmed in our basement.
