G.I JOE #1 Relaunch 5 Page Preview - GI Joe News
ndb:
I must say, that's a lot better than what I was figuring. I like it so far, but we shall see on Wednesday.

The kung-fu grip joke did make me lol, however.
angelofdeath69:
I like how they resolved the thing with the public face, but the uniform design is not to my liking really.
thairestauranteur:
Pretty neat artwork! Reminds me of Jim Lee's, Rob Liefeld's, and Whilce Portacio's!

G.I.Joe's art has never been so good!
SolidSnakeEyes:
That art makes me want to be sick. The visual realism has been sapped from this title...and the idea that it's reminiscent of Rob Liefeld is terrifying. He's one of, if not the worst comic artist to ever stay in the mainstream spotlight.

Oh, GI Joe...
Zer0G:
Looks like Viggo Mortensen as shipwreck.
Bleak5170:
And the winner of the Most Improved Artist Award is...

Seriously, while still not perfect, (probably more suited to a superhero book), Kurth's pencils have improved dramatically.

Renegade:
This looks pretty cool so far. And hey, by the first page, there was a big battle scene! The line between war comic/action comic may be handled right if this keeps up. Also, the political aspects, and public figure role of GI Joe might actually coming across nicely, as per this mini preview. I will have to see more to be sure. But I think the writer could possibly bring a new feeling into this layer of the GI Joe universe.

I don't care much for the super hero-esque uniforms, but hey, the art is looking great so far. I think if it gets better, this will be one comic that everybody might want to watch for. Just, please, lose the bright, skintight gear and make the Joes look a little more serious. I know GI Joe has had neon phases and such, but it was never that popular with the fans. I wouldn't even be mad at something closer to the movie designs.
Rainbow Viper:
as predicted...this looks and reads AWFUL. bad ripoff of avengers, bad jokes, bad art direction, bad color palette, bad execution. I can only imagine what it will be like when the anonymous blogger, Gossip Girl, I mean Hashtag enters. I'm so offended by this.
fireflyguy:
Idk. I'll at least give it a shot.
Jinx723:
So General Rey is Gen. Joseph Colton???
I'll thumb through it at my comic shop, but I already said I'm done with IDW's main Joe title.

You know you will probably just get mad, but how? I mean if you hate mainstream comics then I guess I understand. Where is the Avengers rip off? Why is this so bad? I think it reads, pretty well: It explains the status quo, it uses some seldom used RAH concepts, it establishes some mythology to Joe beyond the current team with Adventure Team, it makes a easter eggy/fanfic reference to Kung Fu grip (but it is a comic so is it that so bad)?

GI Joe has been since the beginning of RAH - SHIELD vs a supervillian team. So I just don't see how this is so bad.

The art looks like modern comic art. Better than a lot from the big 2 and worse than a bunch. So I just don't get how horrible it is.

I only read the marvel coniuation. IDW has proved they cannot tell stories or have decent art work in this "reboot" or even when the other one started a couple years ago. IDW really just sucks. Honestly give joe back to marvel.
Drawing Heat:
Too early to tell. I'll give it 3 issues. Nothing in these pages excite me.

Not at all. Without the cliche' Baroness alt cover, the classic Roadblock and his gun pose, and the WORMS (if you really should even count that since casual fans may not even know who they are), this looks nothing like GI Joe.

Check out New Avengers 1 and Dark Avengers 1. You can even check out Superman/BAtman Public enemies. And it's not so bad at all but if you're going to use that method then do it right, make it interesting. Don't just have some generic looking guy in a suit who is supposed to be Joe Colton say he is introducing a team but you will only know their codenames. Show us these characters. If they are going to be public protectors, show us...don't tell us.

Exactly...it shows us boring characters introduced on a monitor which has been done 5 times that I know of in Joe comics alone and those did it 10 times better and had 10 times the impact. It shows how predictable the series will be. I'm so excited....NOT.

and what concepts would these be? BAroness on the cover? The WORMS and MAGGOT does not count as those are seldom used characters not concepts and casual Joe fans or comic fans will have no clue who these soldiers and vehicle is. Their presence felt extremely forced.

No it doesn't. It was merely a throwaway line in an attempt to please hardcore fans and for the writer to show he did research and they failed at this. If they were going for fan service they could have at least shown a small flashback panel with artwork depicting the adventure team.OR it would be different if there was a preface to the adventure team or Joe Colton making references to that team prior. It also is not a good concept to introduce for a number 1 since it something again casual and new fans will not understand.

It's bad because STephen Somers already did this in ROC and did a much better job. This blatantly feels like the writer just stole a joke and or was making fun of ROC. It was also unneeded and out of character.

hmm...well perhaps that is all subjective but to me it doesn't look modern. and it's not even so much that the art is bad or that the artist is bad...it's that it is in no way impactful or exciting. it's just really boring, and bland. I mean I get it...we have only seen 5 pages...we haven't read the whole thing. but based on this and all the interviews about it...it's just all around point blank horrible.

WORMS have been around since 1987. I am not sure why you would say they aren't GI Joe or looks nothing like GI Joe. What do you base that on?

I've read those issues. I'm not saying it isn't a rip off, but could you point out what rip off you see.

It's a pretty standard comic, cartoon, action movies etc...set up - I agree. I just don't see how it is an automatic indicator of it being predictable.

Sure casual fans won't know them, but why are they supposed to know them? Is there a reason the book has to use certain troopers? To a casual fan it's just a trooper. To a hardcore fan it's an old toy they may have had as a kid. Where is the negative there. Are there some of the figures who should be off limits?

Sorry, I am just going to flat out disagree with you and go as far as saying there is absolutely no way you can know that - again 5 page preview. You could be right, but unless the writer has said it's a throw away line, you can't know that unless your Prof X.

Ok, sorry. I don't remember it so yeah sorta lame to do it again.

I wish I could step in here but I can't talk about the book until Tuesday . I have read all of Issue #1 and you can't judge a series because of 5 pages let alone the first issue.

I'm not sure if that was sarcasm or not but I have to disagree. Liefeld is famous for being terrible. I really don't like the superhero style of the costumes and artwork.

The line about GI Joe toys was pretty funny though.

That's all I am trying to say. It may indeed be very bad, but it sure is hard to tell with a 5 page preview.

Well...Iron Patriot introduces his new team of Avengers to the public as their protectors. Lex Luthor introduces his team of super powered capes that are fighting for the government to the public. Same concept, same idea, same thing this relaunch series is clearly attempting to emulate. Except they could have done it cooler and had the 8 joes they selected to be with Duke out there standing proudly in attire that are more resembling of what they look like. Instead, we get him saying who they are and you will only know code names but that is it. I just think that scene could have been set up much better being a first issue.

I meant that the preview pages as a whole and interviews based on the series show that it will be predictable. They've already indicated that they are working for the government ala Avengers/Dark Avengers and putting up a public show ie with toys etc. They've said Hashtag will be a mysterious blogger with inside info ala Gossip Girl. So it's pretty simple...Hashtag will post info publicly that the Joes and Cobras see and then act on it, we will probably see someone typing at a computer but not their face and be left to wonder "who is hashtag?" Is it someone from Cobra or Joe? Hashtag will drop inside info on the Joes which will effect the public persona of the Joes thus causing conflict and melodrama. I mean that is the whole plot and status quo right there. They more less told us all this info.

You misunderstand me. I have no problem with this at all. I was just asking you what classic ARAH concepts were presented and was asking if those were what you meant by examples of that?

Well just don't be upset if the Adventure Team makes no visual appearance in issue 1. If they don't, then until they make a substantial appearance in a panel I'm dubbing it as nothing but a throwaway line. If they do make an appearance but past issue 5 it will be because of feedback from readers. Which, honestly...there's no way the title will last as is with this story and artistic set up. The feedback so far for the relaunch has largely been negative. I'd say to expect by issue five for them to wrap up whatever storyline they begin and end this set up. I'm no Professor X but there is no way this is going to sell like hotcakes.

Thanks for just discussing and not getting mad because I disagreed. I definitely see your points. Nice cool discussion. Are you planning on reading it. I'd love to hear your thoughts after a whole issue. Who knows you may love it and I might hate it!
Mr Hebime:
Good or bad, it's GI Joe. I'll give it a chance.
Trojan Gambit:
They had me with the Arthur Adams cover.

I have to be honest, I read the comics for nostagia's sake. I really did not like the most recent run of the IDW comics, other than ARAH. The artwork was dark and trying too hard to be realistic and modern. I found it messy and uninspired. I like the new direction better already.

Wow it's crazy to read the diverse opinions of fans on the GIJOE IDW body of work. Not that my opinion is any more valid then yours I could not disagree more with your take. I love the art and the darker Cobra series. It feels like an HBO script for a live action G.I.Joe series. Just my 2 cents.

The Cobra series is one of my favorite comics of the past few years from any publisher. I think the Chuckles stuff is great. The Scoop issues were good, but not Chuckles classic. I really think the book struggled during Civil War. I love it's current direction while I know some don't like it.

I feel like the Chuckles issues were a great espionage book set in the Joe world. I feel the current stuff retains that mature dark feel, but is essentially a more mature take on a traditional Joe comic.
M_renegade:
Seriously.

It's time somebody that actually knows something about art is put in charge of selecting the artists. I'm not talking about an expert, but at least somekind of... eye, for it.

The artwork is not good. I won't say bad, but looks ugly.
Wrong anatomy, the proportions are off, hands are even worse; the wrinkles on clothes make no sense, the designs (okay, not the artist fault) are awful (what's up with TR's gun???)... he's better than Atkins at plotting the page at least, but still... maybe put them both thogether and might get some fine art. Just fine.

I dunno, to each his own.
I think the whole idea is dumb. They can be "celebrity soldiers", but they don't need to look like superheros. There's plenty of superhero comics, Joes didn't need this.
I'm sorry but no, this doesn't has the slightest appeal to me.

...btw, i just realize is the same style of art than MotUC comics... what's up with it?
I have to admit that the one of MotUC is far worse, but still, this style died 15 years ago with the first Image comics... beurk.

No Problem.

I dunno...I might read it but I'm certainly not going to buy it. I'm pretty sure though after a few issues, the series will get a massive overhaul cuz I just don't see this set up working out. Plus, the performance of the movie will probably have a big impact on all the comics in general I think so I don't expect the status quo in all the books to stay the way the are for long anyway.
Trojan Gambit:
I don't think the outgoing style was bad, but I never warmed up to it. The new style isn't perfect, either, but I like added detail. My favorite old school ARAH artist was Michael Golden, just for an example. There are new artists doing amazing work, like Greg Capullo on Batman, JH Williams on Batwoman, or the guy that was doing Animal Man (name escapes me). Would be great to have someone even close to that talent level on a Joe comic.
OUTRAGED:
When you start a relaunch with duke instead of hawk it tells the fans right off the bat that this comic is gonna be crap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gadfly:
A lot of talk about how it's a "rip off" of Marvel or DC stories, but more importantly, it looks to me like a rip off of America's Elite.

Absolutely love cobra! My only real issue is the art. Mainly during the Oktober guard series. Had a very hard time telling what was happening. And Flint's hair...is...uhm...yeah. hahaha.

Also, IDW as a whole, my favorite. I just wish they'd stop killing off their own characters! I have liked a lot of them. Especially Black Light.

Agreed.
Dusty Ayers:
I like it so far. The toy and kung fu grip jokes made me laugh. I found the "pc team" picks to be realistic. In this day and age if Joe were out in the open all the right "flavors" of humanity would be represented. It also easily explains why the team is what it is.
Breakerfan:
They lost me on this one. I may pick up the trade when it comes out but it's not worth trying to get to the comic shop every time a new issue is released. It really reminds me of the DDP reboot when they scaled the team back. I was not a fan of that then and I don't anticipate enjoying this as much either.
