Hasbro 2011 GI Joe Q&A Round 4 Answers

Hasbro 2011 GI Joe Q&A Round 4 Answers

1. Will the Tecno-Viper have the Cobra logo on his chest? Will It be Red or Silver?

1a. Yes - it will be silver.

2. Backdrops to the Joe Universe historically have come to us with playsets. Recently Hasbro gave us the added bonus of backgrounds in the packaging which could be easily shaped and formed into diorama's. My son and I love the playsets and backdrops, but we also like the other small things Hasbro has added to the figures by means of accessories. These items have really helped flesh out the fantasy universe: tiki masks, bear traps, constantina wire, bomb robots, etc... Trust me, there is a lot. For example, when I though I didn't need another snake eyes, you see one with a new mask packaged with him, making it a must have. What is the thought process behind the accessories we get wich don't necessarily have to be character specific, and with the way some pieces are being released are we seeing an unnoficial "build-a-playset" without knowing or realizing it?

2a. When designing a figure, it has always been our philosophy to tell a story with the figure, to let the figure's gear "speak", to shape the character and his mission or role on the team. At the beginning of the design process, when a character has been identified, we take it to the next level and ask some questions. What does he do? Where is the character going? Where has he been already? The answers help us to paint the picture of who this character is, and what role he plays in the G.I. JOE or Cobra Team. Oftentimes, it's the more ordinary or unexpected items which make the action figure, and capture a child or fan's imagination. And its true: the more figures you buy - the larger and more vivid the universe becomes.

3. In a recent Q & A it was stated that there would be more information given on the upcoming 7 packs. Most fans were expecting to hear about these at SDCC, but nothing was mentioned. Are the 7 packs still in the works or scrapped?

3a. The 7-packs are still in the works and are worth the wait! We will be releasing more information soon so stay tuned!

Well, so much for a decent Night Raven.

More answers:

TNI: The Kwinn figure which was shown at Joecon was absent at SDCC. When asked it was said Kwinn had not been canceled but it had not been determined which wave the figure would show up in. Has there been any change on Kwinn’s status as to when we might see it on shelves?

Hasbro: We're still hoping for an early 2012 release of the Kwinn figure.

TNI: It has been said that Hasbro will be at NYCC this year in full force. Will there be a GIJoe presence at this years convention and are there any exclusives planned?

Hasbro: We are still determining which Hasbro brands will be included in NYCC. We will let you know either way once we know for sure! If we are there, we will not have an exclusive this year.

TNI: It was recently announced the new Data Viper figure which was shown at Joecon this year has been canceled. Is it possible we might see this figure released through means other than mass-retail such as the new figure subscription service coming to the Collector Club, or is the figure totally off the table?

Hasbro: As of right now the figure is off the table.

The Transformers site The Allspark sent some questions off and got their answers:
Hasbro GI Joe Q&A 2011 Round 5 - due Monday, October 3 - The Allspark Forums

Of note they managed to rewrite my 12" question into something...less aggressive. And still gave pretty much a BS response to it.
MAJOR BLOOD:
Terrordrome:

Q1 — What were the factors in the design process to redesign the original Night-Viper into "Jungle Assault" Jungle-Viper (Ed. Note: Many felt that the Jungle-Viper was heavily inspired by the Night-Viper)? Did you change the name and design just so it would fit in better with the Pursuit of Cobra "Jungle Assault" theme?

A1 — The Jungle Viper was never intended to be a redesign of the Night Viper. Originally, the Jungle Viper was envisioned to be a type of high-tech marksman wearing a Ghillie Suit which made it invisible. The theme was intended to be an "City Strike" mission. Once the design began to take shape in sculpting though, it become more celar that the long, fractal shapes of the JV's suit were best suited for the tropical foliage of a Jungle. The similarities in color came later in the design process, and they were done both as a nod to the original Night Viper, but also to "expand" the universe of the Cobra Army, to make the JV a fitting counterpart to a tactical team which might include both JV's and Night Vipers.

Q2 — Any chance the Skystriker sticker sheets might be revised in an upcoming shipment... it would be nice to have some white in the stickers so you have "red, white, and blue" instead of "red, grey, and blue." It would also help the tail fin stickers show up better on the black plastic if they had some white highlights/outlines to them. The character specific stickers need some white highlights/outlines as well. So in summary any chance we can get a revised sticker sheet in the future with some white in it.

A2 — We have no plans to release a revised sticker sheet at this time.

Q3 — Seeing that 2012 is the actual 30th anniversary and NOT 2011, will we actually see the 30th anniversary run THROUGH 2012 (Ed. Note: Aside from the couple waves of figures that are expected in 2012.), or will it be pushed aside for the G.I.Joe 2 move line? Could we expect to see classic figures and vehicles mixed into the new movie line possibly?

A3 — One of the reasons that we were so excited to start the 30th party early was because we knew that we would have limited time to capitalize on it before the movie. Right now the plan is to transition over to movie. Because there are some great classic characters in the movie, we hope that you might see some figures and vehicles that you'll recognize.

G.I. Joe Forum Discussions at The Terror Drome » View topic - Aug/Sept 2011 Round 4 Hasbro G.I. Joe Q&A Answers & Round-Up

118th:

Q) Would you consider putting extra heads in figure packaging that would be a nod to ARAH enthusiasts? Say you use the Duke name that the retailers want but you add something like a Foot Loose head to make the fans happy. The retailers still buy because of name recognition and the fans buy for the figure they desire.

A) We often include extra heads with many of the figures (Snake Eyes, Dusty, Zartan, Jungle B.A.T. to name a few). We’ve also worked very hard to develop figures that the fans have been asking for like Sci-Fi and Techno-Viper. Typically we like to keep the heads related to the figure in pack to avoid confusion (except for Zartan). We don’t have plans to do heads that are for completely different figures.

Q) Will you consider modernizing the GI Joe brand similar to the POC figures and the 12″ figure that have just come out? POC seemed to be liked by most fans and kids may not relate to a figure that was made in the 80′s. A modern look could possibly draw in the kids that eventually needs to pick up the line.

A) Our focus, as you know already, is celebrating 30 years of G.I. JOE. Certainly part of that is Realistic Military, but it has manifested itself in the form of 12″ figures. Although you’ll see smatterings of cues from Real Military in the 3 3/4″ line, there are no plans in the immediate future to release a line dedicated solely to military realism (although, admittedly, it would be very fun to design!)

Q) What is the final word on the Data Viper? At SDCC we were told it was canceled and other outlets have said it will come in some form.

A) This figure has been cancelled for the immediate future.

Disappointing answers overall so far. Of the ones they actually answered.

That said, just because the tooling for the original Night Raven no longer exists does not take it off the table. Two years ago that's what they told us about the Sky Striker. If there's enough demand, they'll tool up a new one like they did for the Water Moccasin, Skyhawk, Vamp and Sky Striker.

The complete cancellation of Data Viper, and the already announced limitation of the 30th are somewhat unfortunate though (if expected).
Gyre-Viper:
Data-Viper on the table.
Data-Viper off the table.
Data-Viper climbing back up to the table...
Data-Viper off the table.

Dearest Hasbro,

It is not mere coincidence that Data-Viper has come up so many times in these Q+A's.
PLEASE try to get Data-Viper to us.

THANK YOU.

True, but I did like the statement of classic characters in the movie. I just want to believe with the positive fan reaction to early POC that Hasbro will do what it can to make the movie characters fit in with those figures as much as possible.

That could go either way IMHO.

Classic characters could simply refer to the character names used in the movies.

Technically Hawk, Scarlett, Ripcord and Heavy Duty were "classic characters", but looked nothing like they used to.

I would love to see classic-inspired designs in ROC2, but I suspect that is somewhat unnlikely.

For example, Roadblock does not look like classic Roadblock (any version)

well I did like the one answer about the movies vehicles..

Sounds to me like their letting the movie take control again. However, if this movie does was the first one should have, namely having recognizable characters and vehicles (even cameos and easter eggs would do) then it could be a good thing.

Not releasing Kwinn would be one of the worst mistakes EVER.
Every time they revealed something of Kwinn's ilk, it would become
an immediate joke.
46 Zone:
Hopefully, they have taken the requests on multiple websites, and noted the popularity of the the recent Zarana figure (female figs don't sell my ass!) and make one of the 7 packs a Dreadnoks pack.
gunslingercbr:
I love the presumptuousness of the questions, as if the speculation the fans make up is reality. it is one thing to speculate amongst one another, it is another to ask questions to Hasbro, who knows the truth, from the basis that the speculation is reality.

"Hey Hasbro, what made you decide to update the original Night-Viper into Jungle-Viper?" "We didn't, dumbass."

'Hey, Hasbro, since you have the original Night Raven mold..." "No we don't, I don't know where you get your information." I particularly liked the snideness in that response.

A SDCC Exclusive sellout of a figure targeted at the hardest core nostalgia-driven collectors doesn't equal "popularity for female figures." That said, a Dreadnok pack would be fine. Not my cup of tea, but I know there are plenty of fans that would eat it up.
The Batman:
Why in the hell is everyone so damn concerned about the Data Viper? He looks like shit and would peg warm worse than an Artic Destro. If you quit harassing Hasbro about it.. they will put out the shitty figure and you can all have your way.

I've seen some "questions" on both the Star Wars and G.I. Joe Q&As that are less "questions" and more "angry rants." I'm kind of impressed by how Hasbro manages to completely ignore the "tone" of some of the questions directed at them.

A lot of people seem to forget that these Q&As, as informative or non-informative as they may be, are a courtesy that neither party or parties are obligated to partake in.

I mean, if folks prefer we go back to the days of "the only time we get ANY sort of interaction with Hasbro is at conventions" then that's fine, I suppose.
drunknmunky:
I've have yet to read any if these Q and A and come away with any useful information. The questions are usually the same ” where is this figure that we seen?” And Hasbro saying we're not getting it. Same with the Night Raven question. They could make a new Night Raven but we cried for a Skystriker and now those are peg warming. I wish Hasbro would give us real info. ”
” What are the 7 packs going to be?”
” Who said we were making 7 packs?”.
” Um, you guys did”.
” They're not in stores yet but when they are you will love them”.
They dodge the questions we want answered but then have to answer stuff like ” why does JV look like NV?”. Is this really the best we can do?
Van Hammer:
I'm very dissappointed. But I guess that's what Hasbro does best.
80sKid:
So now the big question is who are we gonna get in the 7-packs??? I for one hope they round out the Renegades line with:

Cobra:
Baroness
Zartan
Destro
Scrap Iron
Major Bludd
Tomax
Xamot

GI Joe:
Roadblock
Flint
Jady Jay
Red Star
Jinx/Wraith
Snow Job
Shipwreck

not a bad idea, but last time Hasbro made 7 packs for a defunct, irrelevant animation, nobody bought them.

Batsy isn't the only one...the Data Viper looks like a cross between Pyramid Head from Silent Hill and a plastic uniformed turd. On the upside, I can use the predator drone. The downside...it's a waste of money as the rest of it gets trashed post-haste.

Between the fan-boys (and fan-girls, albeit a handful of them), it's $h!t like this that makes leaving the hobby all the more desirable.

I bought them from the Club at the Convention this year.

On clearance for 30 bucks each But I agree, Renegades would not be my top choice.
pig iron grenadier:
There is usually only one or two answers that have any relevance to these sessions.

I appreciate that Habsro does them, but the questions SUCK.

And I'm sure people will troop build data Viper like they did with Jungle Viper...OK, move along.
TEMPLAR BAGGINS:
At least Techo Viper is still confirmed. I'm happy. Now, if they cancel Lifeline and Airtight, I will rage teh internetz!
Stryker927:
How about a spec ops green shirt 7 pack and a Cobra Vipers spec op 7 pack. Each comes with a recon/sniper, radio/communications, heavy gunner, flamethrower, explosives expert, rifleman, and team leader. Army builder pack like that with all that gear is definitely NOT going to peg warm.
pig iron grenadier:
At this point the 7 packs will have Lifeline and Airtight and Kwinn in the Joe one. 4 more to figure out.

Don't forget Law y Order.
Maybe the other Renegades? Scarlett, Tunnel Rat and Ripcord?

.

Didn't they say something about if they made 5 or 7 packs, they wouldn't release them at retail? I seem to remember somewhere reading that they would be online only (and of course if it's on the net it must be true).
fireflyguy:
I just hope they bring out Lifeline. If he is in a 7 pack, then I'll get at least 2 of 'em. A 30th anny 7-pack with Lifeline, Kwinn, Sci-fi, Techno Viper, etc., would be cool.

I think a Renegades 7 pack or 2 would be cool. I really want the Cobra Trooper from Renegades. That looked so sweet it gave me diabetes.

The answer I liked best out of all that I read was the one about movie figures and vehicles. I just hope Hasbro (and Paramount) learned their lesson -- NO MOLE PODS! Give us nice, usable vehicles. Make a Hummer with a backseat, not a pop-up canon that fires things.
Stryker927:
Agree on the Cobra Renegades Trooper. Definitely going to pick up two of those. Love the Law and Order too.

Hasbro could just mail out stickers for the stores to put on the Mole Pod boxes with the new logo and name of the sequel. That's what they should have done with the ROTF figures my TRU and Walmart still have too.
