The Cobra Commander figure from the GI Joe Rise Of Cobra line did not receive the warmest reception, and coming soon to store shelves(some of you have found wave 1 already, but it isn’t a widespread release, yet) is a different version with different accessories and a new head sculpt. Could the Chase Cobra Commander from GI Joe Pursuit Of Cobra Wave 1 achieve more success? Aside the fact that it is a chase figure, is it worth picking it up? First off, a little background info on this figure. Cobra Commander here was originally planned to be a mail away figure in a unique Cobra themed Rise of Cobra style package. For whatever reason, that plan was scrapped, but Hasbro really liked the idea of a Cobra themed figure card so they released it in a Pursuit of Cobra style package with only some of the accessories it originally was going to come with.
Cobra Commander is the same mold as the ROC Cobra Commander with an all new head. The head is black with a vac metal mask glued on. Underneath the mask is a new burned face. While reminiscent of the Rise of Cobra head, it is slightly tweaked all over the place. The eyes are smaller, the nose is lowered and there are other little details here and there. (I've included a picture with a ROC CC head that has been dry brushed to show the mold details) Cobra Commander's torso is painted in a metallic red color while the coat is a dark grey with dark tan collar and a reddish purple liner. There are two new weapons included with this Cobra Commander, a staff and a cannon. The staff is very ornamental with a large red Cobra sigil on top and two red banner ribbons hanging down. Under that is a sculpted cobra head and another stylized Cobra sigil. The cannon looks like something you'd see in a sci-fi game like Halo or Unreal. The back of the card claims it's a M.I.A.W. (Multi-function Individual Assault Weapon) The pistol is the same one that came with the first ROC Baroness so it has a peg to allow it to plug into the hole in his leg. Cobra Commander comes with a Staff, Pistol, two-handed Cannon and a two peg Cobra Stand.
I think the newly sculpted, vac metal mask adds a lot to this figure and makes it look more menacing than the original ROC Cobra Commander looked. Add in the new accessories and I think this makes it a definite buy. Since this figure is a shortpacked, "chase" figure with unique packaging, I'm sure many collectors will grab it just for that.

I got mine in the mail today, but probably won't open it unless I find another on shelves. From simple first looks in package I'd give it a 7, but that could improve or worsen after opening it.

what? no unpainted white-mask POC CC test-shot??
heheheh.
great review for an incarnation that is better than it's ROC predecessor but
still not on par with 98% of the POC line.

Gave it an 8. Never thought i would like an ROC-ish CC. Somehow.... I'm strangely comfortable with it. Got my 2 MOC and 1 loose.

I wanna see the dry-brushed custom in the line-up pic.

I love the new CC figure.
It's very fun to play with and the new head is an improvement on it's predecessor.
