Eopie Herder:
The comic packs have been a great way for Hasbro to introduce new figures, and reissue older ones at a price point that it not much higher than a single carded figure. This has had it's ups and downs, but we have been able to get some cool figures in the process. It's a win win situation, as we get at least one new figure and Hasbro is able to reuse molds to put a second figure in that either has slight deco changes or some major changes, they win by being able to reuse a mold, thus saving money. By doing this we have gotten some greats, like Hawk, Breaker, Iron Grenadier, the Crimson Twins and so forth. It also can backfire and we get such gems as Duke and Cobra Commander. The typical scenario plays out as such: We get a cool new figure (Copperhead) packaged with a repaint (Shipwreck) who may or may not have some new accessories.
And that brings us to the point of this conversation, Wave 6's Comic Pack: The Dark Beneath the Silence with Dataframe and Beachead. This one, however, gives us one of the best scenarios; a new figure and an upgrade to a previous figure.

The comic itself is one of the best I have read of the newer stories. The story is nice, not as childish as some have been, and the artwork is some of the best of the new issues. (BTW, I do not see any credits for story or art) As some of the comics have seemed rushed in both departments, this one is much better. The story isn't some of Hama's greats, but nowhere near as dreadful as the Tripwire/Cobra Commander comic.

COMIC BOOK RATING: 8 out of 10
Eopie Herder:
Dataframe, the brand new figure in the set, is an update to 1986's Mainframe. Again we seem to have an issue with the original copyright so he also got an upgraded name.
Dataframe's body is the torso and arms of Shipwreck with new hands, and the same legs used on most of the original 13 (Snake Eyes, Hawk and such). The head is new, but seems kinda odd. It doesn't look like it was symmetrical in the sense of one side seems to come further out than the other. Could also bee a warp in the plastic when it was removed from the mold. His helmet looks like it once belonged to Starscream, but still looks cool. The left hand is the kicker though. It was sculpted to look like it's holding floppy discs, or typing. It can hold the gun loosely, but aside from the floppys, not much else can be done.
Dataframe comes with his handy dandy 1980's era computer, which was early for it's time. Nice and portable, but not quite up to today's standards. It now features legs that fold out. He does not come with his backpack like his vintage counterpart, but comes with the communication device that hooked up to it. Unlike the computer, it is updated to be wireless. His gun is Dialtone's, which make me hope he is on the way. Dataframe also comes with a cardboard piece that has a printout on it of two old school floppy discs and two of the more recent kind. He also has a bandoleer that does not seem like it was meant to be removed.

Overall, I think it's a great update. Came with a decent amount of stuff, even without his backpack.

FIGURE RATING: 7 OUT OF 10
Eopie Herder:
This is one I have been waiting for ever since it was revealed a few months ago. I loved Beachhead as a kid, he was one of the last I ever bought and was immediately well used. I was happy when he was released again late last year, but he was far from perfect, lack of range of motion in the arms, cool tactical vest yet it hindered the arms even further and he just seemed a little off. So, an upgrade seemed like a blessing.

And this figure delivers. As far as the usual reissue figure go in the comic packs, this one is by far the best. The colors are almost a perfect match for the vintage, and the overall look is identical. His new vest is styled just like the old one with ammo clips in the front. His gun is almost identical to the vintage, the difference being a removable ammo clip. And, just in case you loose it, his satchel has another removable one. He has a new head, which is larger and better detailed, but also comes with an interchangeable one and half pulled down balaclava. The unmasked head is a great sculpt and has fantastic paint apps to simulate a close cropped shaved head. Apparently Beachhead sports a handlebar mustache, which seems appropriate for someone who proudly professes to not wear deodorant. (sorry, couldn't resist the nod to the cartoon!) The one downside is that this figure suffers from the same problem as the comic pack Firefly, his included pistol does not fit well into his holster. And, as much as he came with, adding his backpack would have been cool too, but I understand the need of costs.

Overall, this figure is now one of my favorites. Great update, and well worth the price of the comic pack alone.

Monkeywrench:
Thanks for the great review. This looks like a must have set
pud333:
Looks good. Definitely will get now.
VIPER 48:
I love this wave of comics. I didn't think i would at first but when you see them in person you can't help but want to get them...
vermillion21:
Great figures, but I thought the comic both in story and art was pretty lame ...
Batmandk02:
I must have these out of package!!!
XVoodooDollX:
ok did they REALLY have to make Mainframe come with floppy disks?

hasn't that old bastard heard of a USB?
kingsurlycrab:
colour me reactionary, but i'm probably the only person who will end up preferring the v1 BH release. i just didn't care for either head sculpt (and couldn't even get the unmasked head on the figure without heating it) and traded them... but hey, i really like the wave 12 cobra trooper everyone disses. go figure.
1SGHauser:
Love both of these figures. Had a dilemma in deciding which Beachhead to use as my default BEachhead and finally decided on this one. I love the throwback to the original. The v1 is a nice figure, but I have to go with the original look. Mainframe is sweet as well...great update.
Synthoid69:
I like both figures! Both look very nice. I really want a Data(Main) frame.
Ev!L ErN!E:
great review... awsome figures... must have them both!

Actually, I’m pretty confident those are Spirit’s hands.

Well this IS from the eighties you know…
KALASH69:
I too was extremely pleased with the beachhead figure (I bought him loose, no edit Mainframe for me). I found that Marauder's M1911 fits nearly perfect in his holster (it's slightly thicker, and shorter). You can jam it in there and it'll stay nice.

I also swapped out his gun for an M4A1 with master key (M870 Under barrel shotgun) from Marauder as well. Over all I really like the Beachhead throwback.
sgt.bludhound:
can't wait to find this! well X-mas is around the corner i been good this year so i think...well see..

No Cobras? This confused me... Mainframe is a Joe.

As much as I liked the new one when I saw pics, I think I prefer the V1 to this new one, including the vest. We'll see, I will open mine in the next day or so, but Mainframe is the main reason for getting this one. Beachhead, at worst, will give my V1 some new accessories and an optional vest.

If I didn't have the more realistically-colored V1 Beachead, I'd be very happy with this one. Nice gimmick with the balaclava. I never expected Beachhead to be a Ginger!

with out the mask, he is inspired from some episodes of sunbow gijoe and partly inspired from the marvel gijoe comics!
Fierce Krypton:
I would be interested to hear if anyone else has bought this and has the same off center mainframe face.... That kinda screws up the deal.... Also I still dont feel like Beachheads head is shaped right.... they went from huge jaw to huge fore head.
butter_the_pure:
wow those look nice, thank you!
Crimson Rage:
So Beachhead is really Adam from Mythbusters under that mask...?
germ:
i thought they were great except mainframes head/face looks horrible. his head is to small with that goofy fitting helmit, his face looks like a mongaloid, and every other figure has a removable helmit. except him.

oh- plus it sucks no one hardly comes with backpacks anymore.
Aladdin Sane:
I like the v1 BH better too, but the comic pack release does looks pretty sweet on my shelf. The balaclava kinda looks lame though (sorta slanting to one side). I imagine I'm not the only one who has this issue.

Sorry to crash your party, but I like the v1 BH as well. Better colors. I also like the w12 trooper... another color variant means another addition to my technicolor army!

CornDog_The_Ninja:
I really loved the 25th ann. Beachhead and thought he was an improvement on the original.

When pics were posted here of the comic pack Beachhead, I thought he was kinda lame and even though I wanted Mainframe, I didn't really want the pack because of the throwback beachhead.

After I bought it, though, I dig him totally. Looks just like the original. The 25th ann, will still be my default Beachhead, but I can't get rid of the comic pack one.

I've got this set and I don't think it is a matter of his head being off centered but the paint on his skin does not reach the helmet on his upper right eye down his right jawline. This can be fixed by carefully painting that area of his face.
Hit n Run:
Great review!! I didnt open my other beachhead because i knew this one was coming and i'm definitely opening comic pack #11
MikeyT:
Beachhead looks sweet......Mainframes face looks weird. I'm just sayin.
synthalus:
Thanks for the great review Eopie!!

    Beachead is awesome!!
    Can't wait to get him
Although the Mainframe figure isn't that great,
I still want him because I like the character.
flywheels:
I finally found this @ retail the other day, but passed since I had the Ultimate Battle Pack in hand. It did look good, but I was on the fence. After seeing the side by side pics of the 2 Beachhead figs I'm sold.
DrKain:
Well I managed to find this pack along with the other two today at Kohls. Funny that it is my first time ever going to that store and they had the new comic packs, and they turned out to be $8.99 instead of the $12.99 the price tag stated.
Tall Creeper:
I can't wait to get a hold of this comic pack, these two look really cool and I love the detail of the clip being removable to reload your gun that's a nice touch
Headman:
I guess I'm the only person who likes the single carded version of Beachhead better, but with that said this was a great comic pack.
Monkeywrench:
great comic pack. I picked it up today, I love it.

Nah, I do too. I am not a fan of the new bright green or the masked head, I like the V1 head and desaturated color better. I'll probably paint the balaclava more of an olive green to match his V1 uniform and put the new head on him though, to switch back and forth.

I still think it's nice that they did a ARAH-accurate one though, but for once, I liked the updated version better than the strict update. Even though there are many classic characters still to be made, Beachhead is pretty iconic, and I respect that they've gone back and done him right now due to fan's reactions.
darth_henning:
Actually, I'm another who prefers the updated beachhead single over this one. I don't really know why. Just looks tougher as he should.
gunslingercbr:
the comic is just laughably bad. I've never been a big fan of Hama's writing in the original series, and his recent work on G.I. Joe is even worse.

good thing he could write his ass off for the filecards.
xFlintx:
I love the comic pack beachead. It really takes me back to the old days of Joe.

I don't know, I just find something cooler about the comic pack than the original. It might be that the head is not just Firefly's head. Or it could be that the comic one is show accurate, but I like it better.

Nope Beachhead in the cartoon doesn't have a mustache & goatee.

I don't think he had one in the Marvel comics either.
