According to the twitter page of Brian Ward from Shout! Factory, GI Joe The Movie will finally see the light of day in disc format, on blu-ray! Here’s the tweet in question:
So the print’s in excellent condition. Looks like we’ll be doing GI JOE: THE MOVIE on Blu-ray.Love it or hate it, the 1987 animated movie has been demand for quite some time, with space allocated for it in the GI Joe A Real American Hero DVD Footlocker Set released by Shout! Factory last year. It was also originally intended to be released in one of the 25th anniversary/Modern Era DVD Battle Packs. After years of waiting, movie fans will finally be able to see the original movie again, this time in high definition!

Awesome news. Although I am not sure how much better animation is on Blu-ray vs DVD but regardless, I can't wait to grab this when it comes out.

According to Brian Wards tweets, one of the special features is going to be feature length commentary with Buzz Dixon!

I want the alternate ending with Duke dying

Hmmm. Interesting. I'm interested more in the special features.
And yes an ending with the death of Duke would be worth seeing. I'm wondering if it will change my feelings toward the film.

I wasn't going to buy this until you mentioned commentary by Dixon.
If you haven't read his interview about the whole serpentor cobra la thing, it's very interesting reading.

Hmmm this could be cool. And as for animation on bluray... The colors don't get mutedwhen upconvirted and large shaded graidents Are much smoother. Ofcourse boneof this matters if your this smaller than about 42 " because you reallycant tellat that size.

I'll most likely get the Blu-Ray Version first and the DVD as it gets cheaper or I find it used.

As much as I disliked where this movie took some of the Joe verse, I'll still get it.
And I too want to see the alternate Duke ending.
