Nemesis_Enforcer: Wow, that's awesome. I just need to sell a few more gallons of my blood and I might be able to afford it. gunslingercbr: I saw one of those in person a few weeks ago, and I can say the box is freaking huge! anyone who has ever seen one would understand the shelf space argument for why retailers won't carry such items or are reluctant to. those TRU 50 piece sets don't even compare in size. I obviously really missed out as a kid. Too bad expense and space keeps me from "correcting" one of the many gaffes from my childhood.
(yes I was one of those fools who sold their vintage Star Wars figures for more Joes and MASK figures) Mr. Focus: Quote:

Then I see today that he modifiy the auction type. He is probably gonna get more thatn the 2500. DESTRO: I hope not I really do not want to pay that much! mikeTime: I remember when I got this as a kid the box was almost taller that I was. I spent all christmas day puting it together. Best X-mas ever.

I got mine last year and it is mint with the stickers on original sheets, the two drivers which are not MISB anymore, all of that minus the box...
I payed nearly 1500 for it. Considering this is MIB and unassembled...yeah is bound to get pricey. DESTRO: All depends on how hi it goes. Snow Job: Will not be able to afford. Ever. But it looks nice. Alley Viper: I saw one sell a couple of weeks ago on ebay mint in box never opend for over three thousand dollars. I kept an eye on it since the seller was in Erie Pa which is only a couple of hours away from me. C.I.A.D.: DESTRO, you better win it. I want to buy the box from you and live in it. Fire_Fly: Its says MISB mint in sealed box in the auction. But yet he states he carefully opened the box to verify its contents. what a goof shipwreak73: I know I have shown this picture before, but it is always nice to gaze upon the "unatainable" for me. Shoot, you Michigan guys could see these live and in person someday if we were ever to get together=) canprime: It's weird.
About 5 years ago I bought one MISB on Ebay from someone on the east coast of Canada. I paid $260 for it (& almost $100 for shipping), but it came in a long box with no art. Similar to the larger interior box pictured in this auction. However it was definitely all one box and about 6' long (almost as tall as me).
It's a shame I don't have it anymore, but at least I got more than what I paid for it when I sold it. Porkchop Sandwiches: Will my target HISS tank be worth that much one day? A.V.A.C.: it's so much prettier opened and assembled. whoever gets it, will deal with that temptation for sure. personally, if i had the benji's i would buy it and open it, again. Gothiczartan: that is why this nice playset needed an updated for the new gijoe toy line!
other joe fans wanted this playset. so why not hasbro can make a new space vehicle of this for the new generation of kids and well as collectors (who never own this playset before) EdWLilly: that was one of my more favorite playsets going up. It was just about the only one I didn't have to worry about taking up to my room. So it got a lot of play it was a base and often taken over by cobra so they could go into space. BigErn: What Hasbro needs to do, which they won't, is take orders paid in full upfront for massive playsets like this. I think there's enough fans out there who would buy things like The Flagg, Defiant and The Terror Drome that as far as their bottom line is concerned, it would be a win win situation for them. They would loose no money with product sitting on shelves and the fans who want those items get them without having to go broke doing it. kealthaz: I remember this toy I saw one when I was a child it was side by side with fortress maximus in our local toy store back then I wish I have this it will look great beside my brave maximus today hehe thnx for the pics BOMBSHELLMIKE: $129.99 in 1991 TRU back-stock. wish it was 91' again (not really!) ANYTHING! Just as long as we get them! flywheels: I had got out of GIJoe by the time this toy was released and I never quite understood why it was so popular since it wasn't as military themed as past vehicles/playsets...but the more and more I look at it I'm starting to understand why it's a highly coveted item among Joe collectors now.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the auction brings in more than the original Buy It Now price. You just don't see stuff like this and in this condition that often.
As for something new on this scale...I probably would still pass. Every time I acquired a large vehicle/playset I've ended up selling/trading it as I just don't have the room anymore. Of course it's easy for me to say that now...but if I were staring at a pre-order online I may not be able to resist! flashjack: Even though it's a large chunk of money, it's 100% worth it to own such a beauty... Granted, the setup portion of the manufacturing process is a lot cheaper in China than it would be here, but still costly. Looking at the retail price twenty-one years ago (basic inflation brings that to $244.35), and taking into consideration the rising cost of oil ($115 a barrel today; it was about $18 when the original was produced) affects both production overhead and transportation expense, you're looking at something that would cost end consumers a minimum of $350, but most likely over $400. Never mind the $50 or more it would cost to ship it to east coast buyers, and $400 is only if they could move (estimating here) at least 10K of them. Anyone really think there are thousands of people willing to spend that much on this? What if the price climbs to $500 (not all that unlikely)?
No, there just isn't sufficient demand. Honestly, I never saw the appeal of it in the first place. STAR WARS was in space; G.I. Joe was on earth. That's how I saw it, anyway.

I begged, pleaded, even whined like a little girl for it and almost wet my pants when I woke up Christmas morning to bathe in the plasticy, spacey goodness. My brother and I had many hours of fun with the Defiant et al. Now if only I could convince my wife that $3k wasn't too much for a toy... SPC Airborne: I wish I had a couple grand to buy it. Xerofall: How many people would assemble it, if they had the $$$ to buy it?
It would be hard because part of the reason it's so darn expensive is because it's minty... but the playset itself is just too darn cool to leave in a box.
That would be a toughy. But in the end I think I'd open and play with it. DaViper: I like to collect things MIB but xerofall is right, I would have to open and assemble it. That's part of the fun when you get a vehicle. Especially appling the decals! Elite Force Cobra: your going to make a few car payments with this auction lol w0w downpayment on something or pay off something good job and an excellent prize to buy a great piece of vintage history joe who ever is the winner good luck all! Syn3sthesia: I would assemble it in a heartbeat! Elite Force Cobra: really? thatw ould be cool i guess u really couldn't enjoy just a box i can second your notion on that i mean i would assemble it then put it up for display in a nice clear case C.I.A.D.: See, I'm a MIB collector (I love the look of the figures carded on pegs, reminds me of walking in to a toystore back in the day)....
But if I were to win this Defiant..there's no way I would be able to leave in MIB. Fast_Draw: cool, but that set never interested me as a kid. I never really fantasized about my Joes in space... darthZartan: I always thought it was kinda silly. It came out in 87 (?), after I stopped buying them. But after really looking at it close (this thread got me wondering if I missed out on something) I wish I had picked it up. It would have renewed my toy collecting for sure. I would just use it as a base. Or 3 bases. Man this toy is awesome. The auction just hit $2,025. with 3 days left.
Oh yeah, If I had this I would NOT open it. how many of these can there be out there that is MIB? 30?40? dragon73: WOW!!! I am so tempted to bid on this.I have a Flagg that is still sealed in an awesome box and these two would look sweet together.Speaking of my Flagg I have a question for you guys.Being that my box has the Canadian flag on it instead of the US flag does it make it less valuable?? NotFastEnuff: Wow. I remember going to TRU and seeing that thing still there in the early 90s. Still $100. If only I hadn't been a deadbeat and had a job. I'd have bought them all. Anyway.
As to what CIAD had said, at Botcon 2 years ago, the Hartmans sold their ENORMUS boxed collection. (said to be the most complete TF collection) I so wanted to win the lottery, walk in and buy it all and sit in the booth with my son and open every toy. I just wanted to watch all those "OMG!! You opened a MISB toy...you bastard!!" people balk. Yes, I'm an asshole.
Good luck to the bidders. darthZartan: 10 hours to go. I'm going to predict the final bid to be....
