So after about a year and a half of owning a 360, I got the ring of death. Three red lights are currently illuminating on my 360 when its turned on. After googling fixes for the problem, it seems there are many potential solutions out there. Have any of you come across a way to fix it, without paying an arm and a leg to have Microsoft repair it? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have gone threw 4 total xbox 360's two had the ring of death... I wouldn't chance opening my box and killing any chance of them fixing it. If I'm not mistaken the "rings of death" mean internal hard wear problem...
good luck

The warranty for red ring is 3 years. log in to xbox.com and register your unit, then request a repair. costs nothing

I am on 360 number 4. Bought a new Resident Evil version after selling the last replacement microsoft sent me. I still got red rings from the refurbished systems that they sent me. The newer xbox's supposedly have the hardware fix which is why I bought it. Just a thought for you.

I've gone through three X-Box 360s myself. Luckily, between Target's refund policy, Circuit City's extended warranty, and Microsoft, it hasn't cost me anything extra. I have InterCoolers that attach to the back of my two 360s. Alone, they don't do much, but I supplemented them with two small 6 inch fans that I bought from Target for $5 each. One blows between my 360s, and the other one is positioned behind the InterCoolers and helps them suck the hot air away. The best thing though is having the X-Box Live update that lets you copy the game disc to the hard-drive, that helps keep your 360 running a bit cooler because the laser isn't constantly running/reading. (You still need the game disc inserted to play though, and you need to cycle to your game library menu and select "Play from Hard-Drive.) Yeah, all the fans are a bit noisy, but that's what the stereo volume is for. (I have my premium 360, two TVs, and both the 6 inch fans plugged into a multi-tap power plug surge protector that I turn off when I don't have company over, to save electricity. Of course, my main TV, Elite 360 & Tivo are plugged into another surge protector that I always leave on.
