I was introduced to Final Fantasy with XII... I was instantly drawn in and loved it...
After that I picked up FFX and X-2 and had a blast with both. Then as soon as VII became available on PSN I instantly bought it. Here's where I had a problem. Going backwards like this just got to me. Yes it's a classic, and I'm familiar with the story and the characters and the impact it had on gaming Once I miss an installment in a franchise; especially if it is between console generations I just skip it. That's why I haven't played MGS 3 or Resident Evil Zero or Wind Waker or Twilight Princess or even GTA Vice City even though I really want to. Once you see how good graphics can be very hard to go back to inferior graphics no matter how much you want to IMO. Quote:
...but since I didn't grow up with [FF7] and didn't have either a nostalgic connection or an appreciation for the gameplay or graphics, it was really hard for me to get into it. In fact I haven't finished it and doubt I will anytime soon. I'm not trying to disparage the game at all, it's just hard for me personally to get into it.
I am torn on FF13; not sure if I have the stamina for an FF game anymore. |

FF1-8 was epic.
9 onward just terrible. Series needs to die, along with Squenix. FF13 worries me, I've heard terrible things from people I know in Japan, and the price of it has truly plummeted fast there. It's a lot shorter than the rest of the series, with no real side stuff, no hidden things, nothing. |

I've tried playing 4 and 5 when they were re-released on the PS2 along with 6, but I just found myself unable to get into them. The original Chrono Trigger was awesome, too. I know that's not FF, but it still rocked. I wish I had a DS to get the re-release that came out for it.

Actually, I thought 8 was absolute crap. Barely played 9 (It came out too close to the PS2 release), but I enjoyed 10. 12 wasn't very good. Not because of the battle system (which I actually thought was pretty cool) but because it did nothing to make you give a hoot about the characters.

Length just for the sake of length isn't a good thing. A few secrets are fine, but a bazillion side-quests that don't link to the main plot in any way are just filler, unless they're integrated at a point in the game where the plot doesn't make it seem like you're on a timeline (which is...pretty much all the time in most RPGs). Nevermind that a good chunk of the gaming market are now people with families and jobs and other responsibilities, so devoting 100 hours of one's life to trying to beat one playthrough of a game might not be nearly as feasible as it was when they were teenagers (in fact, aside from apathy about the characters that's the main reason I didn't finish FF XII...it was too dang long and there was too much to do). I love some of the old JRPGs, but there are plenty of "traditions" in the JRPG field that need to die a lot faster than the FF franchise and Square-Enix. If nothing else it sounds like they might be trying to break out of some of the outdated, silly conventions of the genre and actually push it forward a little bit. They may or may not succeed, but I'll at least give them credit for trying something a little different. Last edited by Jmacq1; 02-26-2010 at 07:43 AM.. |

Chrono Resurrection - Project discontinued Too bad that Square shut them down. The President at Square said if the fans want a follow up they should buy more. I find this humorous because the games they have put out since have not been up to par. So he is basically saying we don't care what you as fans want even though you take matters into your own hands and are showing that there is clearly a market for this, just keep buying our shit. When I read this I started pondering just how many more of their shitty games I will buy. In other words I am right there with you. CT rocked and is one of the top two RPGS of all time for sure.

Never played any FF except 7, which was (and still is) awesome. That being said, I've went ahead and pre-ordered FF 13 hopefully I don't regret it.
