anyone here used Steam to download/purchase PC games?
here's my deal: from about 1994 to 2002, i played X-COM: UFO Defense fairly non-stop on an older computer i had lying around. that died, and i didn't play for several years, but i downloaded it free a few years back and played it on a newer computer using DosBox. about 1.5 years ago, i got another new computer, and since then, i haven't been able to acquire the game because 2K Games (or TakeTwo or whomever) obtained the rights. it is now available for download via Steam for $4.99. a very acceptable price for my 2nd favorite game of all time (Civ IV is my current #1). however, i don't quite understand how Steam works. if you purchase it, can you play it any time, even without an internet connection? any other issues with Steam? i guess the long and short of it is that i plan to shut down my cable/internet in a few months, and want to know if i'll still be able to play the game (or other games, for that matter, should i decide to purchase more). I have steam, and play X-com all the time on it. Works great, no problem. I have never tried to use Steam off-line, i don't see why it wouldn't work, but i would check thier FAQ.
The only negative aspect is you have to run the games through Steam, so if you pull it off of your computer, you lose your games. |

i thought i read something somewhere that Steam checks for an internet connection every time you try to run it, or try to run an app thru it. that is what has me concerned.

UFO Defense is such a sweet game, i would set up a Steam account and get the game, even if you can't play it for awhile. Eventually, you will be back on the internet, and X-Com will be waiting!

True, To tell you the truth a few months ago when my internet connection went down I couldn't play anything I had on steam. Although I've read your supposed to be able to play in some offline mode.

steam is valve's digital distribution , when you purchase the game it downloads to your computer and you can play it any time .. the game is yours.. even if you format your computer and you loose the game , just re-download steam , then re-install xcom steam saves all your information. ive downloaded all my purhcases at work so when im working over nites i got something to do.. xcom , great game
