I'm amazed we don't seem to have a thread for this already.
I picked it up yesterday and while I only got to play it a short while, I've already been floored by the level of detail and just how "alive" this setting feels. Unless it completely falls apart later on (doubtful) I can safely say this is the greatest Western-themed game of all time. (Yes, even better than Custer's Revenge!) It might even be in the running for best "Sandbox" game of all time, too. There are some fantastic "in-jokes" and homages in there too. So far...definitely a very well-done game. Much more than just "GTA in the Wild West" though there are certainly comparisons. The control scheme and sandbox elements are similar, but the "subquests" and mini-games are a lot less "silly" than GTA and generally suited to the time period. So far it seems like aside from the occasional joke here and there it's mostly played serious, which is awesome (I understand the need for humor in GTA, but this game gives you a lot more options to "take the high road" than GTA does, even if you are an ex-outlaw). |

I've been interested in this game ever since it was announced two years ago (was it that long ago?). The reviews are overwhelmingly positive (a 9.7 on IGN!) but I think I'll wait for "second take" reviews to filter in before buying it, since it's in a gaming genre ("sandbox" games) that I'm not really into (I'm an old-ish fart and like straight-ahead linear progression in my video games).

Well, like with most Sandbox games there is a "main story" that you can play through in a roughly linear fashion. But yeah, you'll be missing out on a large swath of the game if you do.
I've also heard the multiplayer is pretty awesome, but I haven't tried it yet myself. If you like linear, you might want to check out Splinter-Cell Conviction. It's pretty straight-ahead (though short) albeit with different options for how you approach each level. |

What does "sandbox" mean? I've never heard the term before this thread.

The term is sometimes used interchangeably with "sandbox" and "free-roaming"; however, the terms open world and free-roaming describe the game environment itself and allude more to the absence of artificial barriers, in contrast to the invisible walls and loading screens that are common in linear level designs. The term sandbox refers more to the mechanics of a game and how, as in a physical sandbox, the user is entertained by their ability to play creatively, boundless of artificial structural constraints, and with there being "no right way" of playing the game. |

Still, if the positive reviews continue to come in, I'll be checking the game out as a rental at least. Last edited by zuludelta; 05-19-2010 at 12:12 PM.. |

Yep, it's a lot like the GTA games in that regard. It's just that instead of wandering around a city, you're wandering around a (fictionalized) swath of the Wild West.

It's GTA in a western environment. Sounds awesome.
