I built a MAME cabinet from scratch last year. It was a fun project, and really improves the emulation experience.

Oh man, I almost envy you not knowing what MAME is! When it sets in what it is, and all you can play is an awesome feeling if you're an old schooler I discovered it in '01 and haven't looked back since. Just Google it;)
I love the old stuff, you just pick it up and play. When I'm stressed, I'll actually play some Donkey Kong, maybe Balloon Fight. I can even sit down with my kids and play (In fact my 8 year old had the time of her life playing "Contra" with me two days ago). The old games were wonderful in their simplicity. Nowadays games, you have to buy a Player's guide that walks you though the whole thing, and that's no fun.
