I am glad to see more of the peripheral characters showing up as figures. I have always been more interested in the strange looking and less action-oriented characters, so I am glad to see more stuff on the way.
I saw the new Micro Machines at the Fry's in Las Vegas yesterday, looked pretty nice but not something I collect.

Man, toys aren't even officially released, and my local Walmart is already pissing me off:
They set up the pegs. Not sure how complete the set is given the lack of Titan figure spots (the Marvel section is about 75% Titan figures), but if this is close to finished? Disappointment ABOUNDS First off, the store didn't even read their own planogram sheets (I read them as they were left hanging around on the shelves) which wanted Star Wars on action alley (the "main" pathway by toys, not the back wall pathway). Second, the store only allotted little over 4 measely feet to Star Wars. Sounds impressive until you remember that the prior leaked modular was over TWELVE feet of product. And of course, the ONE assortment with stuff I actually wanted (MIssion Series) will NOT be carried by this store, and nobody else will be open that early AND I can't make it to Target (an HOUR away) until at least Monday. Good thing I got that coupon.... And doesn't factor in the ONLY Micro Machines stuff posted is the basic 3 packs. No playsets, deluxe sets or figure packs. But it's weird to have read Walmart corporate stuff about how big Star Wars is going to be...only to see a given Walmart clearly not give two effs about it. Again, I'll see how it actually turns out on Friday morning (much of this could be mitagated by the supposed "pallet trains"), but it this has only continued to reinforce my disdain for mass retail, especially Walmart.

The only thing about Walmart at least were I live are good about sitting on their stuff when the street date comes up. Heck some Walmarts didn't even bother to put out the Black Series Display.

Also, as if we didn't know that stuff will be everywhere...
Dollar General will be having a significant push for Star Wars as well, including at least the Jungle/Space assortment and Micro Machines Blind Bags. Que jokes about Star Wars at dollar stores the first day :p Quote:
The smaller your town, or the less competition a store has, the less likely it is that corporate will devote resources and inventory to that location. There are people who are complaining about the "same old stuff" that I've never even SEEN in my area, or if I did, have been sold out of for MONTHS. Mine never got the feature displays (with the Hot Wheels and Black 3.75 figures), which makes me...pessimistic...about my store actually having the feature displays, or those displays actually having some of the "missing items" from the regular shelf modular I saw.

Fear not, I have friends at walmart, some of the product are on stand alone pallets set to be put at "strategic" places near both toys and the checkouts. There is a LOT of star wars stuff hitting walmart I'm picking up the titan stuff for a dio project (Make jokes).....But the 1/6 titans with vehicles are alright, poe with his speeder, and the trooper with a crowd control walker. Not to mention the JAKKS star wars oversized figures speaking of oversized walmart will have an exclusive including a 4 ft vader retailing @ 100.00.....LOTS of stuff!

Y'know...I'm recalling that for the RotS release day, a lot of the stores also had a bunch of new stuff for other lines out as well (Marvel, Transformers, etc...). If you're a multi-brand collector like me (and many others) even if there's not a ton of the Force Awakens stuff you want, there may be other goodies worth grabbing (like maybe the new 50th Joes at TRU, or the Hulkbuster or Rhino Marvel Legends waves, etc...)

At midnight those guys ripped open the pallets of Star Wars stuff and the Walmart employees were freaking out getting upset. I quietly made off with my Joes.

That happened a while back when another Star Wars release was done at midnight, everyone was there for the Star Wars, I was there for the 25th DVD packs and cases of the newest wave of figures! Haha...
At midnight those guys ripped open the pallets of Star Wars stuff and the Walmart employees were freaking out getting upset. I quietly made off with my Joes. It was a far cry from 1999 and the TPM release, where the TRU I attended had pizza and doughnuts for everyone, handed out coffee and/or cocoa to people waiting in line, and definitely had the whole store open (admittedly it was a different TRU in a different city, but still). Ahhh, the golden days of yore. How quickly the mighty fell...the AotC midnight release was pretty underwhelming (admittedly probably because I went to Wal-Mart and watched them unload palettes for an hour) but RotS was pretty much a return to form, as I recall. I think of all the Midnight Madness/release days that one was the craziest...TRU at Midnight, then hit up Wal-Mart's "tent sale" and Target early in the morning. Had to get the jump on those Titanium ships (later available everywhere) and get that (crappy) Lava Vader! ;) It's always weird, too. Being part of that initial rush where everyone's kind of frenzied trying to get what they want but somehow managing to be polite about it (at least in my experiences). Usually it's a pretty good time hanging with some fellow geeks. Which is pretty much the only reason I'm likely to be out there Thursday night this go-round. |
