I just got the new Mattel AVATAR movie RDA Scorpion gunship.
I have to say it's very nice. It is a solid built toy, made to be played with, and has some nice features. First off some background: The gunship is designed by AVATAR director James Cameron, you'll notice the similarity to the ALIENS drop ship. The RDA is the contracted military force in the movie. They make use of several aircraft and the Scorpion is the back bone of that force. The gunship is a VTOL design that has tiliting rotors that are of a stacked prop set up. If you rotate the upper rotor it causes the lower to turn. You do have to assemble it. The rotor wings, weapons wings, kanards with cannons and the tail all have to be snapped into place. I had no problem with this at all, everything fit smoothly. The cockpit is nice but sparten, the HUD and control surface raise to allow the access of a pilot figure. Joes do fit. You can see one that I palced in the cockpit. It's a little snug but they do fit. There are no decals to place since they are painted on. The Scorpion is painted in a drab green overall with a gold coloring to the missile pods. If you notice the Hellfire missiles, one on each rack fires. Now this is a little cheap I think as all four shooting would have been a nice action feature. The one thing I do like is that the missiles that do fire fit so snug and clean that they are un-noticable when set. Unlike other spring fired missile weapons on other toys which tend to be off sized and very noticible. The Scorpion is realistic in design yet fanciful enough to fit nicely with your Joe or Cobra collections. The retail for the Scorpion is $20.00. It is ripe for customizing as I plan to do for mine. I would recomend this to anyone looking for a unique aircraft for their collections. Last edited by Phalsis; 11-03-2010 at 09:21 PM.. |

Thanks for the review. It looks really cool. Where did you find it for $20.00? I've seen it at TRU for about $27.00.

Yeah, I've seen this for $27, and if it goes on sale for $19, I really think I'll pick one up. I like it a lot. I'm a little concerned about the size and I know some of you have it and said that certain Joes don't fit, so I'd have to really work with it because I'm determined to make it work in my collection.

My local TRU had this one and only this one, on the rack for $20.00. I was surprised to see it for that. Honestly it's worth the money for as nice as it is.
You can do a little sanding at the front of the cockpit floor and along the base of the molded seat to allow for better fit of a Joe. That's what I'm doing. |

Yes.
I put a Cobra Viper in it to test the fit. It was a little snug but the cockpit closed and he didn't look crowded in the cockpit. I plan on making a custom pilot for it. As I said, you can do a little sanding around the floor of the cockpit to the seat and where the feet go to get a much better fit. |

I don't see these flying off the shelves, and I am scratching my head because I think it's really cool. I'll bet that a year from now someone will post some cool pics of it and someone else will be asking desperately where they can buy it. LOL!

Damn! Why couldn't they make it just a little bit bigger?
But I still might pick one up eventually. It looks really cool. |

It's bigger than you think. I was surprised by its size. I tried to get a decent comparison of size with the Joe in the pics. It's a little over a foot long.

Let me ask this: What about an old ARAH (O-Ring) figure, who an old figure fit in the Scorpion? I know the 25th/RoC style figures are a little bit of a tight squeeze, but would an old, slightly smaller figure work better? If so, I have no problem using older figures.
