I'm sure that this has been talked about - I don't doubt that at all. I think I was inspired to start ranting because they are airing Avatar on FX, and I can't help but get sucked in.
I will leave the merits of the film aside. That is a debate I do not want to get into. But regardless, I find myself still frustrated this many months later that they were unable to capitalize on the action figures.
I bought one. I bought Neytiri, and was HORRIBLY disappointed. She was rubbery, and her weapon was a singular piece of crap. It was bent right out of the package and had the arrow attached to the bow and the string. She had no other accessories, and minimal articulation, and worst of all, was NOT to scale for the other figures in the line.
How hard would it have been to really make this a fantastic line? I find myself thinking of the recent 30th anniversary Joes, who have amazing articulation, and a WHOLE HOST of accessories. The marines could have been awesome, giving them pistols, knives, the rebreather masks... make the Na'avi proportional (even if you have to set them at a slightly higher price point) so that the whole line is continuous and makes sense. Give the Na'avi their knives, bows, arrows and articulation befitting the flexible creatures they represent.
I didn't buy any of the vehicles - and so will not criticize those - they looked cool, but I was so disappointed by the rest of the line, I simply let them go at retail. I think they could have really capitalized on this, releasing figures that were compelling and fun to play with. Instead, they gave us crappy rubber stamp-out movie figures - similar to the travesties revisited by the Pirates of the Caribbean line. Is it so hard to see what works in action figures and replicate it?
If they ever come out with Avatar 2 and 3, I hope that they contract with a better toy company so they can release 1/18th scale figures, with the articulation, sculpting and accessories that will make them successful. Skip the 3D computer rendering crap... and just make a quality toy.
If you've read this far - thank you. Again, I'm sure I'm not the first to put this out in the world - and if it is too redundant, then please delete this thread. But I had to get my frustrations out the in world - and this seemed like as good a forum as any.

They were made by Mattel, a proven fuck-up in the action figure market, with certain exceptions. they just can not grasp the concept of 1:18 figures.
I think a Takara Na'vi would have been an interesting thing to see. The slight build of the species would have been well suited to the the similar build of the Microman buck.
Unfortunately here in the States big-time properties like that tend to go to equally large corporations that can pay for the license and produce LOTS of product.
I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar II went the way of Harry Potter (another line tanked by Mattel, surprise, surprise.) and ended up a limited, adult collector-centered line done by the likes of NECA, or, god forbid, McFarlane.
The vehicles looked good, but I'm a Size King. If they weren't being done painfully close to 1:18 I wasn't likely to bite.

Mattel should stick to hot wheels and barbies. It's about the only stuff they can get right and not fubar into oblivion.

The vehicles are the only good thing about the line as I understand it.

i never touched the figures.
only bought the Scorpion and the AMP Suit.
aside from the childish excess of guns on the nose of the Scorpion and the fact the knife sheath prohibits waist articulation on the AMP, those two are great toys.
Still Mattel has the ability to ruin a wet dream- i.e., given a Merchandising Monster to play with and kill it- and I hope the Avatar 2 toys are made by Chap Mei or someone who will know we will try to mix and match them with our Joes and other military toys.
Rest in Peace, Dad.

Mattel should not do 1:18th scale figures. But they rocked with anything larger.
Big Jim was one of the greatest figure lines ever produced.
