I have never forgiven Mattel for making JLU figures Target exclusive (the nearest of which is 100 miles away).
I hear complaining on this site about Hasbro reusing and repainting, but they have nothing on Mattel. JLU and Cars have proven that time and again.

And also: If you want a "classic" Duke and/or Cobra Commander figure...chances are you can get one at a very reasonable price, even on the secondary market. MotUC He-Man and Skeletor? Not so much. |

lol, stirred up a little hornets' nest here, didn't I?
First off, I am in no way saying that Mattel is "better" overall than Hasbro. The title states "HOW Mattel is better than Hasbro", not "Mattel is better than Hasbro". I'm not speaking in absolutes here, just pointing out a few things that Mattel has been doing really well with lately, specifically with regard to appealing successfully to collectors. I'm not talking about which company makes more money, etc... I don't care about that. This is a collectible toys forum, after all - that's why I'm looking specifically at how Mattel has targeted collectors while remaining a successful big business toy company. I admit that Hasbro has done the same, but I'm not sure that they've done so with the same success - in terms of the collectors' market, that is. They seem poised to achieve much success at retail with the RoC line - but why not have it both ways? Some of the points people have (sometimes with venom) brought up in their responses - such as availability, price, and the fact that MOTUC is able to reuse parts more effectively - were addressed in my initial post. I haven't seen anything that leads me to differ from my original conclusion. There are ways in which, from the collectors' market perspective, Mattel is doing better than Hasbro. I'm willing to bet Hasbro sells more Transformers movie toys to collectors than Mattel does MOTUC figures, and will the same with the ROC line. so exactly how are you defining that they are doing a better job? all you seem to have asserted is that you like their offering more. Sure, difference being the Best of the 80's pack was one hiccup in an otherwise consistent run, and most store exclusives have production runs far higher than the MotUC figures.

Well, sticks and stones are easier to collect than either of them, so why not visit the nearest driveway if that's the case? ;) Rarity should be viewed as a positive when it comes to collecting. It's part of the fun of it, in my opinion. Why collect something that's incredibly common?

You know, I'm always wondering why is Mattel the #1 toy company in the US instead of Hasbro. to me Hasbro will always be #1 in boys toys

True, but that doesn't speak to the quality of the toy by any means. All that means is that GI Joe is "easier" to collect than MOTUC.

It's part of the fun of it, in my opinion. Why collect something that's incredibly common? Why bother paying exorbitant amounts of money for colorful chunks of plastic just because they're rarer than some other colorful chunks of plastic, even though you might like both types of colorful chunks of plastic? Rarity in and of itself is only a positive in collecting if you're looking to sell. Otherwise rarity coupled with high secondary market sales are simply a case of supply not meeting demand, which means Mattel is leaving money on the table. but even then they aren't better than Hasbro because Hasbro's toys attract both collectors and kids, that is why they are successful. your entire argument is that they do a better job at devising toys that attract only collectors, but that isn't a good thing, as evident by the bottom line, but at the moment it is al they have.
Besides, Mattel still has countless toys on the shelves for kids to buy, so, overall as a company, they're attracting both kids and collectors.
