First let me preface this post by saying I am a huge Masters of the Universe fan. I own 95% of the vintage figures and several Holy Grail items, such as an Eternia Playset in the box. I also own several rare pieces of original art and rare movie items. But, right now I loathe Mattel and how they are handling the MOTU line. I was very excited when the classics line came and hung on every report Mattel sent out. They stated that this line was to have the largest distribution of any line ever. They lied. They came out with the website as the only way to get the figures. Then they release the first figure as a SDCC exclusive. From then on I was done with this line. Mattel has done nothing but lie to the fans to pad their bottom line. They jacked up the price on the figures to 20.00, when a comparable figure sells in the store for 11.00 to 13.00.They stated there would be no repaints. Now you have a Green Goddess figure, who is a repaint of Teela. They stated they would fix their server, so people could get through to the only place to buy their figure. But every month people complain about the red screen of death. They stated they were going to up their production of figures so they won't sell out as fast. The last figure Man at Arms was supposed to be the beginning of the increase production. He sold out in 40 minutes. And the end all for me is Mattel finally puts out an art book of MOTU designs. This is something I have waited years for. Then they state they can only make 1000 of them and will sell them exclusively at SDCC. But they say don't worry, we will only allow people to buy 2 of them. Also don't worry about the He-Ro figure selling out either because we have made plenty and there is a limit of 6 per customer. Also we won't allow vendors to buy on preview night, just to give you a better chase. On preview night, someone took a picture of a vendor with his badge on buying 8 cases of figures and over 30 art books. So much for limits. Hasbro had all of there exclusives on their website for fans who couldn't make the trip to buy. Including their art book, which is actually a book. Not a pamphlet like Mattel had, 52 pages for 50.00. Yeah Mattell is really in it for the collectors. So I will step off my soap box now. It is time for me to go check out some ROTF and ROC figures, IN THE STORE. It doesn't really matter what store because of Hasbro's Best Distribution in the World, I can buy them most anywhere. Thank you Hasbro for REALLY caring about your product and not just the bottom line.

so, because Mattel makes less MOTUC figures to meet the limited demand, each figure costs more. |

I'm not a fan of any of the toys Mattel makes. I'm not a fan of 6' scale. Although I am a big fan of DC Characters I do not like any of the DC 3 3/4 toys they make. Hope this changes or they lower prices to around $3 per figure.

yes. in manufacturing, you have fixed costs and variable costs. just ignoring variable costs for simplicity sake, fixed costs are the same amount whether you make 1 or 100. so, if you have a fixed cost of $100, and you only make 1, that one costs $100 to make, so you have to sell it for $100 or more. now if you make 10, that fixed cost gets distributed amongst all ten, so now each one only costs $10, so you can sell them for $10 or more. make 100, and they each only cost $1. that's why it actually costs less to make more, because the fixed costs are the same regardless.
so, because Mattel makes less MOTUC figures to meet the limited demand, each figure costs more. So in reality, Mattel isn't doing the collector any favors by making a limited run, except in making the figures rarer. They could increase the production run and charge less per figure and make everyone happy by being able to get more product in the hands of more fans. Selling out in 40 minutes is ridiculous. So why aren't they? Is that the part about catering to the collector's market?

Yeah, I know all that. That's what I figured was the "excuse".

risk. if they make too many and they don't sell, those left over are useless, and Mattel loses money on two fronts: unsold units as well as on the sold units which sold at a lower price whose fixed price was calculated according to a quantity that did not generate sales. Mattel is essentially minimizing their risk with lower production, creating a higher demand that ensures sales even at the higher price.
Mattel's primary interest is itself, and rightfully so. I just find it kind of funny how Mattel is doing such a "successful" job catering to the collector's market but it's in such a way that it does a disservice to the fans of the property.

Mattel is tight lipped about releasing production numbers for those figs (MOTU) so we are left at speculating.

Sorry, but I really liked He-Man. It doesn't age as well as some of what aired, but if I had kids I'd rather let them watch something that made a genuine attempt to instil positive social values than 90% of the garbage on these days. I was so exited when the new one came out because it was good good while being so faithful to the original concept, and so dissapointed when it was abandoned because of stupid Mattel broken distrobution. :( |

Are we talking mattycollector.com here, or is there a real online mattel store somewhere?
