I think we can all agree that GI Joe-style t-bar/ball and socket is pretty much the best hip articulation yet devised for 1:18 action figures. It allows a remarkable range of hip and leg movement with zero BS involved. It makes leg posing literally as easy as moving the leg into the position you want it. No muss, no fuss, no fuckin about. It's such a good and simple way of doing it that MTF, Boss Fight and Hiya (and probably others I'm unfamiliar with) also use it for their toys. This is an innovation pioneered by Hasbro with GI Joe and, despite some dicking around with other lesser forms of hip articulation on movie line toys, also showed up on their Marvel 1:18 figures. You could call this simple, yet effective articulation type a "Hasbro hallmark," and not many would argue with you. So why do Star Wars toys--also produced by Hasbro--persist with a comparatively awful and over-complicated hip articulation method? Seriously, Hasbro, WTF? And you just know those dumb Star Wars hips have to cost more to produce too. It makes no damn sense!

MU has always used a similar system to Joe or MTF, but when they switched to the “Cyke” buck, it lost a lot of functionality. The hip well wasn’t deep enough for the thigh, and the ball didn’t seat well, or consistently, to the extent that moving the hips on many figures resulted in the legs popping off.

Funny thing is the 6” Black series uses Joe style hips yet TVC still uses that wonky thing

I hate SW hips. The "upgraded" ones are better than the previous version but they still suck. MTF-style hips require the same number of parts as 70's-era swivel hips. Why are they not the standard on all Hasbro figures? For SW especially, put the extra parts and work into double-hinged knees instead of this abomination of hip design!

I have several disappointments lately in the articulation area, and one shining example of perfection.
As much as I love the idea and sculpt aesthetics of the ChickenFriedToys Western line, they feel very brittle, posing the shoulders outward is scary as shit, the elbows barely get 40 degrees or so, and the wrist cuffs extrude too far to get any angles out of the wrist. Almost the same deal for the Marauder WW2 line, while the shoulders at least are smooth and not excessively tight, the elbows don't fold 45 Degrees and the cuffs don't allow wrist movement.. and then we have the usual ratcheted knees which makes some leg poses harder to get than you want. Which is all too bad since the Valkyries are poseable beauties and set their standard. And then I got my hands on some JoyToy Dark source 1:18s and boy howdy, these guys are ace. Necks are double jointed, every wrist and elbow goes 45 degrees with no hassle, legs are tight and smooth and can even be rotated along the thigh on top of the nice t-bone hips. Rockable side swivel ankles that still bend back and forth. Some have poseable toes! The plastic is heavy yet malleable, and despite not fitting on the standard pin stand, can be poses any which way you want without one, their balance is so good. These guys are so much fun to fiddle with. My previous go-to play figures had been Hasbro 30th Vipers and Cobra Troopers, and some Joe's like 50th Shipwreck and similar which all have the best poseability of the brand, and these guys topped them. They even have the edge on Bossfight guys, who are lighter and fall over more, and whose joints tend to pop out easier. Anyway, I know you can always put a scalpel to the Chicken FriedToys and Marauder figs to give them range, and Dremel shoulders etc, but what a hassle. Given that the designs would not suffer much at all with more room around the joints to move (again, see JoyToy) I wonder why the designers, of Bossfight fame apparently, let that happen.
