Do someone remember these? they were a japanese line of elastic figures, sold in the US as "Tacky Stretchoid Warriors" by Bandai. I had one as a kid and I loved them. Question is, now I have 3 of them in my collection, but one of them has degraded, presumably due to heat, and has become very tacky and lost it's composure, so much that a bit of his hand has stuck to the box . Do you know some remedy to restore him to a better condition? I thought about baby oil, but not sure and I don't want to make matters even worse. And, how do you think it's best to keep these elastic tacky figures? in the box surely not as they get too hot, do I keep in a zip bag or I display them in the shelf in open air? All ideas are welcome.

Bro, I hate to break it to you, but the tacky feel is due to certain types of plastic degrading on a chemical level. You'll see this a ton in some of the more "rubbery" and softer plastics used in a lot of old school figures, the best examples are TMNT heads and accessories, as well as the same in the MOTU line. I've seen it in the first star wars lines, and not seen but recently heard it also happens with the 90's ones as well. I could only imagine a line like this (20 year old mystery solved for me, by the way. Thanks!) Would be especially prone to breakdown. I'm not a chemist, and only have a passing knowledge of plastics in general, but in having the same question myself in regards to the aforementioned lines, the short, perhaps not "all knowing" answer is no. outside of temporary fixes like washing in dish soap, that's just what happens, as the actual components are leeching out.
And my two cents on keeping them- display them and enjoy them, nothing lasts forever, and that's what toys are for. Edit: this is one occasion where I hope someone comes along and says "Sataninjaku, you are a fool, *blank* is how you fix it", because I have an original Michelangelo with a sticky head that I'd love to fix up.

Thanks for the reply . I have a couple of sticky figures (my childhood Skeletor head, some TMNTs, Batzarro's cape), something which is annoying but I can more or less live with it (and I suspect, that if I tried all my repertory of tricks and stuffs, I maybe could solve it. After thoroughly cleaning it the tackyness gets much reduced). THe question is that with this figure, each time he sticks to something, if I am not very careful he will lose half his hand.
Maybe I'll try dipping him in dishwasher, maybe that eliminates any exterior agent that has gotten into him.

Just as an update, the Habrum figure I had with this problem has lost an arm, completely dissolved away :( . I amputated it before it extended, but now he is very very tacky all around. Tried with several different oils and nothing. I think I will have to get another one :( . I think at this point, humidity is to blame for his worsening condition.

On your broken one you can see if you can get "la's totally awesome cleaner" and see if wiping the sticky parts down with that and rinsing will help.
https://www.amazon.com/Las-Totally-A...72525598&psc=1 I use it for everything. From it's intended use to cleaning paint off custom parts, taking spray paint off my fingers, cleaning off sticker residue. You can find smaller sizes but this stuff is so useful i wouldn't be surprised ive used a gallon since i tried to see if it'd remove paint from customs. |
