I don't think so. At this moment Mattel is suffering even more, than Hasbro, so most likely a merge would be an acceptable move. But we are still way behind any merge or outright buy stuff.

Ehhh—no. Mattel can’t afford Hasbro. Mattel has to work on keeping itself in business to buy anything. It’s very close to time to shop itself to get bought by a private conglomerate but none should want it. Hasbro would need to spread out to something else, media content related if it merged with anyone, not add to its low margin physical toy space.

Depends on your definition of "competing" but neither Hasbro nor Mattel have been the biggest toy companies in the world for the last couple years: Lego overtook them in 2017 and to the best of my knowledge they haven't caught up.
Now...arguably it's not a direct competition as Lego is specialized in terms of the product they make...but a dollar spent on Legos is a dollar not being spent on Hasbro or Mattel product. |
