Those copycats at Mattel just can't leave G.I.JOE alone, that 12 inch son of Big Jim will be made into a Motion Picture!!
The "Transformers" franchise is a big success, and now, Paramount Pictures, weeks before unleashing "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra," is teaming with executive producer Joe Roth to give us "Max Steel" another action figure-based film! Mattel introduced the toy line in 1999 and then an animated series from 2000-2002. But "Max Steel" became more popular in Latin America where it proved to be the No. 1 action figure! The mythology behind the toy revolves around a 19-year old extreme sports junkie who's infected with nanobots. The mysterious infection turns Max Steel into a superhuman. Now, Variety is reporting that Mattel, together with Roth, are looking for screenwriter and director (translation: slaves) to develop the characters and storyline "to match the company's plans for the franchise." man i hated that line. well it proves that Hollywood has no original ideas anymore. so lets make toys in to live action movie all the toy lines. soon there will be a live action gloworm movie or a Berenstain Bears one lol. man its like no one has a imagination any more.

I remember that line. It had a lot of fodder for customisers. Great stuff. Even a 1/6 jet. The character looks like Brendan Fraser. They had a site in spanish for the south american market. The line kept going long after it flopped in america. They had some unique stuff that was unavailable to northerners. As for a movie, they made one staring Vin Diesel as a extreme athlete.

That line was more of a rip on Action Man!
It's a shame too, since Action Man at the time was kind of a secret agent character when he came back strong in the UK, while 12" military Joes got popular in the late 90s. Max Steel showed up in full force, with vehicles and everything and was really popular for a short amount of time. Unfortunately, this is the same time the excellent Action Man toys started to trickle into the US, and he didn't really stand a chance. To Max Steel's credit, he's the first figure I remember seeing with the double knee joints that we enjoy on our 25th Joes. A film based on Max Steel seems a bit like a desperate chomp at the toy/nostalgia based entertainment that Hasbro is enjoying. Of course, Hasbro's got Monopoly and Mr. Potato Head films in the works, so Max doesn't seem so awful I suppose. |
