They've done well with the DST offerings, but that's a small production run (comparatively) to a small group of collectors. Great quality and detail on their stuff, but that's a combination of newer toymaking technologies and more limited production runs. |

Playmates original run seemed forever.
I remember once they had the Ninja Turtles dressed in the original series uniforms. The great thing about that run was the fact that they had access to 25 years(at the time)of Trek history. I believe now, all they have access to is JJ's universe. That's not a bad thing, I'm just saying in that time span they had the license the figures got better and better. The one time they dropped the ball (imo) was when they changed the scale for the FIRST CONTACT figures. They were totally out of scale with the 5inch ones. You know, you would think other companies, Playmates, Mattel, would sit down and just study Hasbro's figures and say "let's try and match this type of quality" when it comes to 3.75" figures. |

I saw that too, that line was screwed from the start because of the afraid of swine-flu John Connor figures.
They supposedly got Bale's likeness rights now so hopefully we at least see that figure make it to retail.

Agreed. I still have lots of the figures from those days in a box in my closet. Too bad they never made any vehicles, other than a shuttlecraft, to go along with them. I also never once saw a bridge playset at retail but then, I lived in a very small town in Georgia back then and we seldom saw squat when it came to the cool toys.
I wish I still had my Bridge Playset but it was huge and I had a friend who really wanted it, at the time I needed the fifty bucks.

And for all the complaining that goes on about Duke arms, diaper crotches, etc., I think Hasbro does strike the best balance between sculpting, articulation, playability, and accessories. Other companies could take a lesson. Those Star Trek and Terminator toys look like grade A shit next to Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Marvel Universe, and even Indy. |

I think it is easy to compare the Indy line to the current Star Trek movie line with their pegwarming persona.
However, in my humble opinion, there are differences in why the respective toy lines failed (not factoring in the current economy): 1. The Indy figures were great looking figures (except for the first few batches which had terrible paint apps) and had nice articulation. The problem was that Hasbro flooded the aisles with the same figures that no one wanted. Case in point, RPG Indy and Mutt w/ snake which still pegwarm today. As a result, the later figures for TOD and TLC were short packed and became hard to find because the big stores (i.e. Walmart and Target) did not want anymore figures because the current ones were not selling. In fact, the TOD case even came with more RPG Indys and Mutts w/ snake. Terrible allocation of figures. Also, perhaps kids weren't into the other Indy movies enough to sustain the line. It was a collector's line that was aimed for kids. 2. Star Trek, on the other hand, has horrible looking figures for the new movie with terrible articulation (from what I hear as I have been tempted but haven't brought any). The allocation and distribution of the characters was fine as I have seen all the figures on the pegs (with the exception of Uhura) and they all just sit there. The Build a Bridge concept is neat but obviously not enough to entice kids and collectors to purchase the figures they don't want. Playmates did a nice job on the 90's Star Trek figures though, just not these ones. The 6 inch movie line is a lot nicer but obviously more expensive and doesn't cater to kids well. Sure, the easy answer is to blame it on the economy which does highly factor into sales of the current toys but whenever I go to the store, it does not seem like the country is in a recession as people are spending and spending (probably on credit cards). But, I do have to say the Terminator Salvation figures were dead on arrival. My local stores have not moved many of these at all. |
