Not to be a Debbie downer or a know-it-all, but I didn't really find that video all that insightful, at all. I thought everyone was pretty much already aware of this (maybe I'm giving the common man too much credit here). I kept hoping to find out something I didn't already know. Oh well.

I like Scott a lot. Love his MotU classics line and own almost the entire line. He knows the business. However with this issue I still don’t understand why, in the day and age of the internet, when a company like Hasbro has their own retail platform, do need to pander to big box marts? If it was an era where half an aisle was packed out full of your toys, then surely I would understand. But it’s not the 80s any more. I’m hard pressed to find more than one small case, at most, in any aisle, in any store, at any time. I seriously question how much volume brick and mortar stores move any more. I don’t doubt that they could sell quite a bit, but not with only a few figures languishing on hooks at a time. Hasbro can sell figures online just as well as any retailer. Hasbro doesn’t need retail, and they don’t need retail exclusives. Pulse should be the only place where Hasbro exclusives are sold, and they’d probably sell more memberships doing so.

A second problem is Hasbro is essentially too big to deliver for the collector market. They need huge volumes and 25%+ margins to justify pulling factory time away from Playskool. In comparison Super7, the Four Horsemen, Spero, etc... are way more agile due to their smaller size which allows them to do things like base production runs off of pre-order numbers. HasLab sort of does this too, but their minimum sales requirement is around $4.5 million. Anyways, I'd be happy if store exclusives were changed to limited timed exclusives and after X amount of time could be rereleased as online exclusives. |

like the guy watch his videos alot but I think he's wrong on GI Joe front.
Says can't find GI Joe at retail as movie was pushed back but they are two brands one is a relaunch of a brand the other movie tie ins. Was Classified meant to have its own media I think so why else the coms on every Joe, the game is closer to its style for example. He said when I asked why exclusives "barging chip" now a brand as old and big as GI Joe needs to bargin to get shelf space in ONE store? There has to be more to this than that no other line releases so many exclusives that aren't repaints... half the collection is exclusives as it stands. Maybe Hasbro burnt to many bridges with past Joe releases I know in the UK we only got wave 1 of Rise of cobra and nothing after that in stores, online only. |

Well, numbers are everything nowadays, and it doesn't really matter whether the numbers are accurate or not. This is because modern business is a bullshit ghost-world built on the perception of value, and not actual value. It's all about the shareholder, and I'm not talking about the average holder with some Hasbro and/or Walmart shares in their fund, but the big guys who actually run the show. The richest of the 1%...the "owners," the entities that own the nation and the world. They're the ones calling the shots, they're the real "unseen hand" nowadays. Even a company like Disney, a seemingly business behemoth, is subject to and beholden to these owners. So, when discussing why things are as they are now, it's important to realize a lot of what's going on is done to please a miniscule subset of people who hold all the wealth. They don't care how the numbers they want to see are achieved as long as they're achieved.

But, the idea of a unified “brand” is becoming dated. Hasbro expected to relaunch GI joe last fall with a multi tiered approach, hitting kids and collectors with toys on the support of a major feature film with tie in support in the mobile and core gaming markets. The delay of the film meant that a good chunk of that had to be pushed back. Classified was based on “Evergreen designs” as a concession to brand unity (notice that those designs also appear on budget toys as well), and the makers of Blackout were probably instructed to use those designs to sell the new “standardized look”. We’re are still in the “growing pains” stage of the brand’s relaunch.

Incongruence is in the value collectors perceive themselves. In the larger scheme of things action figures aren't that important compared to other things like infant and toddler toys. Infant and toddler toys are like the meat and potatoes while the adult collector is the parsley garnish on the side of the plate. There isn't a large enough financial incentive to throw other production processes into chaos just to appease the adult collector community. If you honestly believe that's how the system operates, and you dislike it, then why continue to pay into it? Extricate yourself from the system. Restructure your wants and desires so you pay into systems that you find honorable. |
