I picked up a couple of these Hot Wheels 1:50 die-cast models. These models are advertised as die-cast, that's definitely misleading as only certain sections of the models are truly die-cast metal.
Here's some initial impressions of the two ships I picked up.
USS Reliant NCC-1864 (Star Trek II)
- The upper saucer section is completely die-cast.
- The rest of the ship is plastic including bottom saucer section.
- The heaviest ship as it's basically a giant saucer.
- Nice detailing on the back with the shuttle hangers.
USS Enterprise NCC-1701 Refit (TMP)
- The main hull of the ship is the only part of the ship that is die-cast.
- Not sure why the saucer section is not die-cast?
- Nice detailing on the nacelles with a translucent blue plastic used on the interior.
- The plastic used is not too hard. I had to bend the pylons to the nacelles/saucer a bit to straighten/align the nacelles. Looks like they don't stay straight though.
BBTS didn't have any Klingon Bird of Preys in stock. And I didn't know if I would like these enough to commit to buying an entire case. A friend of mine picked up the Picard Enterprise D from a local comic shop, it's like the NCC-1701 Refit, i.e. hull is die-cast, saucer is plastic.
I really like these models, especially the scale... as I can't see myself picking up those larger plastic sound/light effect sized models. I don't have room for them. Hopefully Hot Wheels continues this line with a new wave... I'm hoping to see a Romulan warbird.
More pics in my album.
