I don't think they are part of the factory - my understanding had always been that they were the go-betweens for stateside companies (like Boss Fight Studios) and the factory, not that they were part of the production process themselves.
Things they've said on Kickstarter would back this up as well. The January 2018 update said this: Quote:
Factory worry about the pressure of releasing 33SKU at the same time. Actually it is crazy to release 33 SKU at the same time by any company. We are discussing 15 sku released in April to May, remaining released in May to June. (We want to attend NJCC in August)

That could well be, not sure how to interpret what they've said in the absence of clear info.

My (very 5th-person) understanding of Alex Wu is that he lives in the HK area and essentially has an office in the factory where the BFS, MTF, and a couple other KS lines have been manufactured. I don't know who signs his paychecks, but I bet the money he's earning off this Dream Lab project isn't his sole income. I imagine him to best be understood as an 'account representative' for the independently-owned factory (regardless what that means in China). There's probably a team of guys like him, all making contracts to keep the factory running 24/7 with minimal down-time. In this particular instance, Alex happens to own the 'art house' company that's contracting with the same factory he works for. He no doubt gets a sweetheart deal on costs, but not a free ride.
I don't assume that this factory makes only action figures. With that understanding, Alex doesn't have moment-to-moment control over what's being pressed out of the molds out on the factory floor. At any moment there can be a delay that stops some stage of production; something as routine as somebody being late from lunch and the 37,000 Bacon-flavored Sporks project doesn't start on time. This causes every other project on that company's production slate to get pushed back, and Alex just sits there with his e-dick in his hand looking like he's making mistakes somehow when he's not at all. For other KS projects; add in the step of having a guy in America trying to coordinate with Alex across two fistfulls of timezones and all those complications. I state none of this as confirmed fact, just the picture I built up with the few facts as I saw them come across my eyeballs on teh intarwebz and few months' experience working the floor at an Igloo beer cooler factory (before saying 'the hell with this!' and joining the Navy!). People also need to factor in that the delivery timeline will be different for someone based in HK than in the US. For example, if BFS says something is coming in February they mean it's arriving in the US in February. It was shipped from HK some time before that.
Dream Lab is based in HK so if they get delivery of the figures from the factory in May it's still probably going to be a while until they hit the US. |

Man those look awesome (zombie). I couldn't afford to join the kickstarter at the time, wish I could have. Will these be sold separately at some point?
