My name is Carlos, and it's been 5 days since my last purchase; only because I have to work to buy more toys.

I could type all day about that topic. I have a snotty arrogant BIL that plays SFIV to the detriment of pretty much any other consideration in life, Video game and game culture obsessed who talks shit on us literally like we have a mental disorder for playing with toys... its so childish and irresponsible for a grown ass man to play with toys etc. With absolutely no irony or shame, it never occurs to him that Video games ARE just toys that require far less imagination and that you just don't actually own the physical characters of. BTW 80 dollar pre-posed fragile statues of homoerotic final fantasy characters are super cool in his opinion. It's nuts. To me Video games are MORE childish than toys since the game sets up the scenery and figures and dictates the story and holds your hand through what to "play" but I know I am swimming upstream with that sentiment.

No, I also share the same sentiment and fight with it daily, my college age son plays constantly and when a new game or beta ??wtf is a beta??? Comes out he is overly excited. I love my boy but we are two different generations as I do not play video games, maybe on a great great occasion with him but it's not long. I see him play for hours and to me have nothing to show but bloodshot eyes and shitty grumpy tired disposition, while I will spend half that time customizing a joe and be equally excited as he is about his game but I have something to show I created something and display it in my room. I just feel the video games have sucked the imagination out of today's youth when it comes to creating their own world to adventure in.
But it's the same old refrain. Every generation feels its' inherently superior to the generations that follow it, when in reality they're all about the same. "Kids these days" syndrome. Not meaning to ascribe that to you personally, but this idea that younger kids are somehow inferior because they have different media than we did is really not true. Remember how our own parents used to talk about "TV rotting our brains?" Or how certain music was sure to turn us into juvenile delinquents if we listened to it? Fast forward 30 or so years...and now we're the parents talking about "Video games are killing kids imagination" and "this dubstep crap isn't real music!" Hell, the fact that most of us are grown-ass men and women that buy toys (for ourselves) already marks us as "inferior" among our own generation. Not as much as it used to, but it's very much not considered "normal" behavior. The more things change, they more they stay the same. Last edited by Jmacq1; 10-10-2015 at 09:05 AM.. |

There's also a cognitive defense mechanism at work where we rationalize our behavior by attacking someone else's. "Well, at least I'm not like THAT asshole!"
