I used to collect the Marvel Legends figures a few years ago. Now all I collect are the new joes. Today my Wal-Mart stocked a bunch and it was the first time I actually checked out these new Marvel figures. I think it's cool how they are the smaller scale, but I was suprised to see they're like 9 dollars a figure! Looks like they'd be around 7 tops. Doesn't Hasbro make these things too? The joe figures are much higher quality IMO, so why do these things cost so much? I'm not going to start buying marvel figs again anyway, but I was just wondering if someone could enlighten me as to why the high price?

they are probably charging that much because they can sell them for that much.

I could probably be totally wrong here, but my out of nowhere guess would maybe be the Marvel name itself.
Maybe it costs more for Hasbro to keep the "Marvel" name than it does to keep the "Joe" name in terms of deals, kinda like how prices hiked when legends figures were bought out by Hasbro when they bought out Toy Biz. Maybe it has something to do with making them more to make more bang out of the item since the license for the Marvel name and characters cost more. I have no idea if I am right or not, but when I noticed they were higher than GI Joes, that was my first initial thought.

Licensed toys (Marvel, SW) carry higher costs than an in-house property like G.I. Joe. Not to mention the extreme cost of brand new tooling, sculpts, artists, production, art, promotion, etc.

The sale price on the shelves is set by the stores, right? Does Hasbro have any say in that?

The tradmark for Marvel names and liknesses - drives up base prices, and stores mark up more thinking they have a sure sale.

True that Marvel has additional license cost for Hasbro but I think they have equalize it already by having plastic t-bar on the crotches and not having stands a compared to GIJoe, their inhouse license.
It's the retailers who set it differently from Joes as mentioned by Darth Henning. Last edited by Pimp Daddy Darklon; 03-29-2009 at 07:10 PM.. |

Yeah but there is still a 'base' price that Hasbro sells the figures to the store. That could still be marked up more than Joe figs. Hasbro can send a "SRP" (i think it is) or "Suggested Retail Price", but the store can still mark more onto that if they so desire, but then you risk losing to your competition by having more expensive toys. Say Walmart and Kohls buys a case of figures. Walmart may follow the SRP made by Hasbro, but Kohls may decide to mark it up even more if they desire, so you see Joes at walmart costing 6.99 while at kohls they may be 8.49. All in all, the higher Marvel prices could mean that their 'base' price is more than GI Joes.

Agreed with the above post. G I Joe is hasbro's baby. No licensing fee necessary. SW figures are at least .50 more a pop than joes as were IJ figs initially. Marvel sells for $1 to $1.50 more per fig with less accessories, smaller cards, etc..
