Ok... I am at a stage in my life were I must decide whether I am going to pursue my dream job or not. I need to know if there is a market for what I want to do. Please give me a solid and extensive answer to the below scenario.
You go to walmarts Toy Isle. There are GIJoes Star Wars and a new line called "Reality Toys". The reality toys are 3 3/4 inch tall they all come with at least 2 good guns and a backpack. They are extremely realistic. The articulation is identical to Modern GIJoes with the addition of a waist swivel(like Dusty). The vests are generally part of the sculpt instead of being separate web gear. There are government soldiers from different governments including the SAS and the army. There are also enemy figures known as thugs which come with RPG's and AK47s, the eyebrows are generally showing meanness and anger. There are 2 civilian figures that are very plain , one male and one female. Each figure comes with a filecard explaining events that the soldier has participated in and any medals that they have received and why. There are 2 vehicles one humvee with a machine gun mounted and one beat up regular truck with a 50 cal mounted on the back bed. They each come with one figure. The figures are $7.50 each and the vehics are $17.00. The question is what do you buy and why? Thank you for your extensive responses Tankers!

What makes GI Joe, Star Wars, and other brands popular are their CHARACTERS. To me, it sounds like these are 'generic' toys with no defined characters, which (imo) would turn me off from buying them.
Toys are for (again, my opinion) escape, not something I can turn on the TV and see. |

I buy G.I. Joe because I'm not a toy collector broadly, I am a Joe collector.

I agree with the Commander and Gunslinger, as I collect GI Joe for the brand and characters, not for the fact that they are military figures. There might be a market for more articulated BBI/Corps-type figures, but I'm not it, nor will be a number of people on this forum. As such, this might not be the best place to get advice on how well that stuff would sell, anyway (we are what's called a "biased sample," not because we are biased for Joe [though we are], but because we are a self-selected bunch, who come here for our love of Joes).

If they looked good, I'd buy them to mix in with G.I.Joe figures. If I didn't buy G.I.Joe figures, I probably wouldn't buy them.

I think the generic brand figures might sell to people who do custom figures, but at that price,it wont sell well. Im not really sure what you are trying to figure(no pun intended) out,but i am curious to know.

I agree with the others, I'd buy GI Joe because they have defined characters and they have cartoons/movies that create a backstory for the line. You see folks here talking all the time about customizing generic vehicles to fit in the Joe universe. You never hear of anyone customizing a Joe figure or vehicle to fit into the True Heroes universe.

I might pick up a few of those, but I too, collect because I am a Joe fan, not necessarily because they are military figures.

I'd definately pick up a few. Most for custom fodder if nothing else, but I definately wouldn't mind a few "thugs" or "civilians" either for my Joe dio scenes.

If you're going to sell action figures the same size at GI Joes at the same price or more, there'd have to be some sort of tie in, otherwise they're just overpriced CORPS figures to most consumers.
Much like the others who've posted, I pay $7 a Joe because they're Joes. Some of us might buy figures for $2.50 or $3.00 that aren't Joes for whatever reason (customs, dios, etc) but I think it's lacking that certain niche. |
