Kai and the recent Remastered DBZ sets (not to be confused with the Season sets which FUNi remastered and -- when it comes to Z -- cropped into widescreen), FUNi went way overboard on breaking everything up. Even now they release anime series as Bluray/DVD combos so that they can squeak even more money out of their poor consumers.
Personally, the Season sets are the way to go. I picked up DB for $13 each (1-5), DBZ for $10 to $15 each (1-7), and DB GT for $12 each (1-3). If you wait around, the sales pop up.

I'll give you a quick synopsis of 99% of the episodes:
-lots of grunting -inane babbling back and forth -more grunting -more babbling -more grunting (this time it looks like one of them is taking a shit in his britches he's grunting so hard) -13.7 seconds of actual fighting -roll credits

Thank you much Nirv. Is dragon ball (non Z) the actual start of everything then-? So it would be dragon ball, dragon ball z, dragon ball GT, and dragon ball kai for a correct viewing order? Bonkers, what am I getting myself into?
Etc. Made a bit more progress on crazy Speed ball

It is story telling brilliance, like a show hidden inside a season of shows!
