Sad times in the Dolf house...the family dog (a Bischon) starting having seizures earlier this week (he is 8 years old). The vet assured us they would go away if we gave him some seizure medicine, but today something weird happened. He had another seizure around 3:30 this afternoon and my wife called me and said the dog was yalping like crazy, and vomiting everywhere. I rush home, take him to the vet, he starts to calm down, so the vet suggest the TLC weekend, becuase he knows that something is wrong with the dog and it might be our last with him.
I think the last seizure must have fried his brain bad, because he has basically shut down all brain activity. His is walking into things, can't control his bladder, shows no emotion or intellect, no responsive to his name, can't drink or feed himself (I am feeding him through suringes). It is like he never existed and this dog in front of me is a blank slate...very sad. I dont really know what to do becuase a CT scan or MRI would require a visit to the Emergency Vet with a minimum of near $2,500 after stay, IVs, scans, and everything else, and that might not even fix anything. If they find a brain tumor or lesion, then probably add another $2,500. We love our dog, but that is a lot of money. I am writing this not for sympathy rather just reaching out and seeing if anyone else has had this experience and what they did about their situation. We don't want to put him down, becuase physically (brain excluded) he is fine, but the question is...can we handle a "empty minded" dog? Give your dogs a good hug tonight.

Dat's farewell birthday??? Huh???
Dolf...I am sorry to hear about your dog. :( :( I'm not going to tell you what to do. If it was me, I would put him down...not to be cruel, just wouldn't want him to suffer. :( We did it with our cat. |

I'm sorry to hear that Dolf. I lost a pet rabbit in August. I stayed up all night trying to nurse her back to health only to have her die when I couldn't stay up any longer. I miss that rabbit still.
I'm afraid there is nothing you can do for your dog. DAT is an Asian Harry Potter?! Quote:
It depends on how much people are with him at home. If you are gone for hours while he is home alone that is not good. I had an American Eskimo that suffered seizures..he got the cheaper meds to help stem his pain and the seizures. He lasted a good year, and his activity changed based on his happiness/health level. It was all over the place..his brain is probably still all there, but will be good and bad days. that dog died in my arms o the way to the vet..I was scratching his "kick" spot right around his back leg, and he was happy as a clam even though he was obviously stressed and in pain. I think he was happy at that moment.
I wouldn't tell you to put him down or not to. expensive scans and crap will likely do no good..the meds will help some though, but ultimately it is probably a death sentence, but who knows how long? That's my experience--I'm sure all are different.....and I'm sorry to hear this. Quote:

I had a similar thing happen to one of my dogs recently.. come to find out he had parvo.. So $700 later he is healthy as can be. But it was a big scare for us. So i understand your situation.. Hopefully everything works out and it's nothing too horrible that it can't be fixed. Best wishes Dolf.

Well us MU guys are a closer knit family than the rest of the Forum i believe.. then again, it's usually the same people in here every day.. so we are kinda like a brotherhood...of evil mutants.
Figured I would try and lighten the mood in lieu of Dolf's Canine Conundrum.
