So I go to Wal-Mart for grocery shopping first thing yesterday morning and they had a big empty area with GI Joe pegs waiting. So I drive back in the afternoon to find that they put figures out, but only had a few stragglers left. I grabbed a Blue Joe trooper, but I still need one more Red Ninja.

Have you guys ever wondered how "vintage" toys ever get priced on ebay or "antique" shops, i.e. "secondary market?" For example, what goes into appraising that MASK to sell for $50?
I suppose rarity figures into the equation, but, as far as I can tell, the only other vairable is nostalgia in that most seller believe that "if its from the '80s, it's worth 3x more now." There seems to be no fluctuation in the vintage toy market. Some commodities go up and down, the price of houses goes into the negatives, but these toys seem to just go up and up. Toy market doesn't seem to be attached to any sort of reality. Ironically, the one time I thought Pawn Stars on History Channel reflected reality was the Pawn Shop refused to humor the transformer collector trying to sell off his collection. In that episode a TF collector had the entire 80s Takara line in multiples, including MOC Fortress Maximus. He asked $20,000 for the lot. The Pawn Star guys brought in the guy that ran the "Vintage Toy Shop" in Vegas and he said the lot was worth $15,000 to $20,000." Pawn Star Dude offered "$5,000," the TF collector countered with "$18,000." In refusing the sale, the Pawn Star Dude ultimately commented that "now, he knew what to look for in a garage sale." I trust Pawn Stars as much as Professional Wrestling, but, here we have a siutation where even a fake reality show could not fake the value of an admitedly awesome toy collection. Both the TF Collector and the Vintage Toy re-seller lived in a rarified bubble of their own reality. I believe toy collecting is really just the "snake eating its own tail," someone says something is worth $300, so we buy for $300, and when we sell we say its worth $300, and so on and so on... |

ll- it's because toy collectors are stupid. these things really are worthless. come the zombieapocalypse (sorry about the infection ll) hot toys and mu figures will be garbage and rubble in the street. shovels, axes, shotgun shell re-packing machines (re-packing shells was a favorite past-time when i was a kid) THOSE things will hold real value. nostalgia is for the dead and infected.

Morning Brotherhood!
Nothing at Target but heading to TRU later ... unless LL beats me. Quote:

Can't say I follow the "market value" vs "collector value" on toys much.I just know that when I want something,I get it or risk waiting and missing out. Either I view toy collecting as my hobby not in terms of an investment.

Tthe only times I buy something with resell in mind is if I get it at retail, or find it cheap at a yard sale. Aftermarket prices drive me crazy, and make me heavily limit what I buy. I've only spent over $40 on an aftermarket 'toy' maybe twice.

I don't like how they say Retaliation Wave 2 - 3 is "cancelled". Why not just say delayed?
