The approved testing labs are charging is only 1,200-2,000 PER TEST. No biggie right, I am sure we can get that from Uncle Sam as bailout money, right? What happens if you have a dozen products? What about 2 dozen? People are already feeling the heat from this. It may not be taking food out of your mouth, or the clothes off your kids back, but it *WILL* be doing that for a lot of people in this country. |

I would assume that toys made prior to the date would be grandfathered into the statute. That is, these used toys are already on the market, have been for years, so they get a pass. I believe this law is will be toys made after the statute is put into place, but I could be wrong.

Why I don't plan on having children anytime soon they are just to much of an expense for what you get out of thier investment, live at home for lower rent and have started saving everything I can outside of what keeps me happy (My joes and my DVDs/Blue ray collection) I am in no manner economical secure as much as the next guy. I have no nest egg and I never finished college, so the future is as bleak to me as anyone else.
Sacrifices have to be made if your not going to able to handle it, I am just saying there are plenty of laws already on the books that have as much impact as something like this could. Government is getting to big as usual and it is working against us as it listens to all the reasons for and against such things. Poor get poorer, rich get richer, it is how mankind has existed for a long time now, and charitable foundations come and go as well as non-profits. If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen is how cut throat free enterpise can be with government regulations. |

They are not flea market businesses, they are children resale shops who help out people who cannot afford to buy new stuff. Having a baby myself, I have many NEW outfits that she has already outgrown. Some of the ones she has worn, has been worn ONCE. I trade these in at these types of shops, get stuff she can use and we're both happy. This law is saying this type of transactions will now be illegal. It's stupid. Hopefully it is only enforced upon the manufacturers to actually do their job of testing. |

The only people that this will affect positively would be current toy/clothing manufacturers. If people cannot purchase older toys for themselves, or their children, the only choice they have is the newer products. Hasbro, Mattel, Playmates... they win! In essence, this could be viewed as a bit of a boost to the toy industry. Problem is, the toys are all manufactured outside of the U.S., so while those in corporate offices and distribution centers will see the benefit, it still will not bring more jobs to our country. It's called small businesses. There are thousands of these types who employ many people. Those people depend on that income.

As a concerned (and dirt poor) parent, who uses these places to keep my kids clothed, and give them a few things to play with, I was beginning to think I was the only one who was seeing the true repercussions of this whole mess, in this thread. No, but there is a large number of antique dealers out there that will certainly feel the pinch. There's no need for sarcasm. When was the last time you went to a Goodwill, or another basic second hand store? I see families in them all the time buying toys/clothes/accessories for their children because it's the only place they can afford to go.

I agree 110% You see exactly what I see. Screw toys. Its their clothes, books, chairs, eating utensils, sports equipment. Everything that could be construed as for ages 12 and under, ALL of that comes under fire. |

The one thing I see good that MAY come from this is that many manufacturers will now be scared of overseas manufacturing causing them to bring the processes back to the US, creating jobs.
It is also a good way for the incoming administration to save face by not pissing off the Chinese of telling US companies to bring it back here instead of there. This law lets things happen naturally by having the companies make that decision. |
