In late 1983, I found some nifty Joe knock-offs from a line called "Gen. Patch" at a Montgomery Ward. They were the exact same scale as Joes, with similar construction, yet with straight-arms.
I picked up two of them at the time-- "Gen. Patch" (the main guy, with an eye-patch and a bazooka) and "Heater" (a red-headed flamethrower guy with a pink batting helmet for headgear). I got them with the intent of finding more in the future... yet I never saw a single figure from this line ever again! I believe they were manufactured by REMCO... but I don't think the molds from these characters were re-used for "American Defense" and subsequent cheap knock-off lines of the mid-80's. The "General Patch" figures seemed rather well-made. I hoped to integrate them into my Joe-verse, but that was never to be. My flame-thrower guy had a short lifespan, as I picked up Blowtorch a few months later. I eventually killed off my General Patch figure, then used him as a stand-in for Nick Fury (the eye-patch was a natural fit). I have never found information on this particular line. I've searched the Internets for "Gen. Patch" or "General Patch", but with such a generic name, I always get tech junkie forums. Like: "general patch for Windows v. 123", etc. Seems strange that I can't find these guys...when I can find information on the stinky "Sgt. Rock", "MASH" and even "Eagle Force" toys. So..any ideas or leads?

Thank you! That's them. Turns out the molds were re-used by REMCO.
That's my flamethrower guy; on the left side of the "Evil Enemy" pictures! I guess I thought he was so cool that I made him a good guy. "Weapons with the smell of battle"?!! Ewww...I certainly don't remember that. So I guess these figures literally stunk (*rimshot*)! I'll still keep searching. I'd like to find a better picture of the cardbacks, featuring all of the figures in the line.

There were a total of (14) figures. The breakdown;
Gen. Patch 'Combat Troops' - (6) figures Gen. Patch 'ParaTroops' - (4) figures Evil Enemies - (4) figures I have most of the figures carded, and will see about posting some pics of the cardback for reference. Also, Remco never used these molds, they were Galoob molds originally, then were reused by many KO companies, most notably Olmec for their Bronze Bombers line. |

I loved General Patch. As Joe knock-offs went, they weren't half bad.

I know I had some of these, mainly because I distinctly remember the 'weapons with the smell of battle' blurb on the packaging.

Yeah, what a bizarre idea for a kids toy, even being a military figure.
