If anything, I'd expect only Mattel toys to go up, they seem to be the ones with actual quality control/health issues

I suppose so. My thought process was along the lines of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

then they wonder why people steal and try to beat the system.
basically what that boils down to is they want "us" to fit the bill for their screw up. |

But doesn't the recent string of high profile incidents with Mattel mean that there will be increased paranoia from those who demand oversight toward all toy companies? And thus, shouldn't prices go up across the board as companies have to institute newer standards, use more expensive materials, employ new workers whose sole job is to ensure the safety of materials, etc.?

it really doesnt matter.....star wars figs have crept up from $5 to GDamn $7 over the last few years...i still buy 'em...im just not getting chewbacca anymore and saving my cash for new and special figs.
lets be honest...its a VERY rare occasion, that ANY price of ANYTHING goes down. have you stopped buying gas? milk? health insurance? hell, i remember when $3 at taco bell would buy a proper meal. when its things we NEED--gas, milk, health insurance--we bitch and find a way to pay. when its things we WANT--action figs, movie tickets, etc, we bitch and find a way to pay. |

Actually, the whole toy recall was not because of lead. That was a cover-up excuse used by Mattel. The real culprit were design flaws. They had to publicly apologize to China for damaging that country's image. Don't get me wrong, there were lead based problems. However, that was not the major reason for all the recalls. People are still blaming lead from China for all the toy recalls even after the public apology. I guess the Mattel PR machine already has succeed if they shifted attention from their own design problems to lead.
