like mine, as much as she bitches about how much toyage (and movies and video games and musical equipment etc etc...) is around the house, I had a root canal a couple of days back, so I sat around watching crappy movies on SCI FI...she suprised me with the new Optimus Prime...

I got my son involved in collecting, both Star Wars and GI Joe figures (He's 5), with me. My wife is so excited that we spend time playing with the figures and shopping for them. Due to the amount of money we spend on these little pieces of plastic...she knows I can't afford a hooker.

Well the first time around 20+ years ago, she started out cool with it, but before I was brow beat into selling it she was giving me crap daily about it, I had no (was no) internet to show her that there were other really cool "geeks" like me collecting and the man/boy with my little toys s#!t was pounded in my head daily! Boy did she feel like a chump as well as me, after those figures/vehicles were seen on ebay years later and the prices they went for!!!
I spend about $20-25 a week now and she acts eh' ok about it sometimes, but the biggest gripe I have is that her or my kids don't even try to get my collecting or pay enough attention to care to look for my want/need list. I have a son and a daughter-in-law who both work at Wally, and for a "short" time they would look for the new stuff, but now I do as well to look every day or so on my own! On B-days and Christmas they all give me gift cards so I can buy my own, (which is cool enough) but, I wish they would just once kinda just look or listen to see what I need and take the time to actually hunt too! Oh well, thats just me being a bit whiney! The cool part about what a lot of you guys have been posting is that your SO's collect too! That is what I really wish I had! If my wife would collect something anything it would be cool, something we could do together, look for stuff for each other. |

Actually my girlfriend is the real reason I have been so gung ho ;-) into collecting again. We live in a smallish town and there wasn't a whole lot to do around here so we would go on "joe runs" to spend time together. She seems to fully support my ridiculous obsession with the g.i.joe universe. I made her a custom character in gratitude to her support.

This is a great thread, and for me personally this is an interesting issue. I just got married about 2 months. My wife is great, and is very supportive of my collection. Up until now, her only concern has been that I had enough storage room for all my collection when we moved in together after we got married.
As long as we were dating/engaged our money was separate. So she wasn't about to tell me how to spend it. Nor was I going to tell her how to spend her money. So my collecting was fine with her. She saw it as my business, and not her concern. Now we're married and we've moved in together and we're sharing our money... and now she has a right to voice her opinion about how we spend our money. And I think she should have a vote. She makes more than I do. It's her money too. But I'm loosing my financial independence just as the Movie Toys are being released... and it's weird not being able to go and just buy whatever I want without checking first. I went to TRU tonight. She went with me. It was fun, and we bought 5 figures. It felt funny because before I took the figures up the the check out area, I turned to her and asked, "Is this OK with you?" She smiled and said, "Well, yes. We have some bills we need to pay, so we don't need any more than these for a while." I said, "I understand." But mentally I was screaming, "WHAT?!!! I've been waiting on this movie and these Toys for over a year!" Ahh, married life. The truth is, being married has been great so far. She's great and I realize that being married is just going to require me to make some adjustments. On the other hand, my brother and his wife have a much worse situation. They poor guy - he got married just over a year ago, and she made him quit buying Joes altogether. So things could be worse. There are a lot of benefits to being married. I'm eating better. The house is way cleaner. I'm never lonely around the house. I'm saving money by cooking at home. There's a lot that's really improved. And I love her like crazy. So I wouldn't go back even if I could. But tonight when she saw the price tag for the PIT and she said, "It costs too much. Where would we even put that thing?" I couldn't help but think, "Man, maybe we should have waited and gotten married next year." ;) Nah... she'll probably let me have one for my birthday.

i've been married for five years and i only started collecting toys two years ago. the collection does not bother her as much but the repainting/kitbashing does. when an idea pops in my head i tend to want it to materialize almost immediately. she's also pregnant with our first child so she needs even more attention now than ever. but she gets into the collecting especially with binaltech transformers. diecast over metal. she loves cars what can i say?
she told me i'm getting MP thundercracker for my birthday. i kinda ruined my surprise by rebutting, if i'm getting a custom transformers cake. lol |
