Here's mine:
1. I do not scalp. 2. I do not hoard (buy up large quantities of items to sell later for profit). 3. I help one local collector friend (will get things for him and/or let him know by telephone what is where) and he pays actual cost when I get stuff for him (though he usually rounds up to the nearest dollar though I don't ask him to). I would perform this service for other local collectors if I knew them. 4. My collecting takes precedence. If I find what I want, I will get it. Others get leftovers. If others find things before me, I expect no less. 5. If I have stuff en route to checkout and a child asked me for something I had, I would give it to them. Even if it was a Chase Wraith. 6. If I have stuff en route to checkout and another collector asked me for something I had, if I had multiples of the same item(s), I would let him have them. HOWEVER...I think that behavior is rude on the part of collectors and I would not ask someone else who had something in their cart if they would give any of it to me even if they had dozens of the same item in their cart. But if I were approached I would try to use it as an opportunity to make a friend/contact. 7. I do not purchase scalped items. I will not pay an inflated price for something that IS STILL IN PRODUCTION. After it has gone out of production, I am willing to pay reasonably increased prices for items. 8. There is no shame in my army-building game. If I want fifty BATs, I will buy the first 50 BATs I see. I help my collector friend but when it comes to army-building, he's gotta get there first. Don't hate tha playa, hate tha game! I acknowledge it is selfish but I feel no remorse. I believe I put in the effort and time to hunt for items, so when I find them, I believe they are my reward. When others beat me to them, I chalk it up to the game. 9. I buy what I want. I do not blame Hasbro for what I choose to buy and not buy. I am not a completist (been there, done that). Being a completist means you give Hasbro control over what you buy. Being a non-completist means you have the power over what you get and what you don't get. 10. I respect the rights of scalpers and hoarders to do what they do. I don't purchase from scalpers, but I probably purchase from hoarders sometimes, but only after the item has gone out of production. I try to get everything I want at retail and not wait. I respect the game. 11. I don't steal toys. I do not do things like take a COBRA Trooper out of a 5-pack, replace it with a purple boots Destro and return it to the store. 12. If I sell something, I try to describe it as accurately as I can. I do not do things like sell vehicles and fail to mention they have no stickers (I've been done this way before). 13. I do my best not to hate on the more socially inept adherents of our hobby. If you are over 13 and you collect toys, YOU ARE NOT COOL, so don't put on airs. If you are over 25 (like moi), you ARE REALLY NOT COOL, so definitely don't put on airs. Even if you work out, have a six-pack, have a hot girlfriend, make six figures, and drive an expensive car, YOU ARE STILL A GEEK. So be humble and empathic. 14. I do my best not to hate on collectors of other lines. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. That's enough for now. Though I probably have some more personal rules that I follow. But I'm sleepy and going to bed. |

Is this a joke? Ethics in collecting is like Ethics in Business. A joke.

just a question : if someone collects , say, football memorabilia, or Nascar stuff, would you consider them geeks? or is it just cause its a representation of a cartoon and comic? just wondering , cause fans of sports spend TREMENDOUS amounts of money on their "hobby", yet they often look down on others for collecting "toys"... |

...if you dont let toy collecting ( or ANY collecting) rule your life, then your "cool factor" or "geek-osity" isnt an issue. theres more factors than your hobby that define you.

I also usually get what I want, and I never buy all the stuff that I see, even if it is hard to find. However, I am considering revising this rule. I saw the Target vehicles, and bought one of each. Came back a couple days later, and they were cleared out. This weekend I bought two of the new TF Classics 2.0 figures. Came back the next day, and they were cleared out.
I'm tempted to buy out all the stock when I see it, and to sell it to locals through the "local sightings" threads for cost, just to keep these bums from hoarding/"scalping." Bunch of bums. (thus, I would become that which I loathe. . .) I also think it's funny when some people get really defensive, arguing, "but I'm not a nerd/geek," etc. |

You know after getting the shaft so many times from people in my area. I gladly return the favor and buy every armybuilder I see. I hold no ethics because people only have them when it benefits them.
