I would be SHOCKED if spiders don't appear somewhere in the Hobbit line, but with 3 parts happening I wouldn't be surprised if the Mirkwood spider scenes have been pushed back to pt 2.
Right now the only 'monsters' are Bolg, the Goblin King, Grinnah the Goblin, and a Goblin Hunter on a Warg. No spiders, but surely that'll change.

...they're seriously making The Hobbit into three freaking movies?
The Kreo teaser image was pretty awesome. I love building toys, but I haven't had any Legos since I was 12 or so. The TF Kreos were mostly crap-looking, but I think a lot of that was "It's gotta transform!" resulting in too much compromise. Joe stuff should be much more straightforward. Will I buy any? Who knows... Speaking of building toys, I was absolutely enraptured with the Laser Peg kits on display at Target. If I were 10 again that would unquestionably be tops on ye olde X-masse litse. The dragon set just dropped my jaw. If I could justify the $70, I'd probably jump on it. But I have so much stuff that doesn't have a displayable home, I had to pass. For now. I had a few Starcom toys as a kid. I thought they were pretty cool. And even as a kid, I knew how magnets fuckin worked. I can't say the same about Visionaries. I thought the holograms were neat, but nothing else about the toys really captured my imagination. My favorite canned figure line started and ended a few years back: Capcom vs. SNK 2 by High Dream (gotta love the Japanese). I think they only put 8 figures out before the line got cancelled. But damn, they did a hell of a job on them. I'm kind of glad I got off of the vintage G1 kick, or else I'd be broker than broke right about now, and unable to afford a Fortress Maximus. The new-direction MP line is more than I can handle as it is. I'll probably stick with Soundwave, hoping he's RP-height... but $120 for 4 cassettes? Seriously? And I know I won't be able to drop $85 each on slightly-larger-than-deluxe-sized Autobot cars. Although with VW presumably agreeing to license the Countach for Sideswipe, this may be the only line where we can get a Porsche Jazz or VW Bumblebee... I... can't get into a $400.00 plastic brick.
Had they made him an MP figure with new and far better articulation, yes, definitely. This, however... I mean, I know a lot of people keep missing out on him [even though I'm pretty sure he's been released once before] but I'm tired of Encores of the same seven or so molds. Or encores in general, honestly. Kre-o... Kre-o. I agree with Irid, the Kre-o sets do go on clearance fairly quick but I think that the dedicated fans, and this has been the most successful non-primary line for TFs that I can remember, will keep the Joe line alive long enough provided Hasbro doesn't half-ass it. Incidentally, I see this being a big push for older Kre-o sets like the Battleship line as folks attempt to bolster their armies. I also see a lot of people who have wanted a true TF/Joe crossover line being happy to get it in a brick form where they not only have their beloved characters but also access to background and other prop pieces using Lego and other brick lines. I picture the true fanatic creating a Prime/Hawk fight with Megatron/Cobra Commander in a Lego suburb. The Hobbit. They did a lot of walking and talking and some crying the LotR set. I hope that this is cut away for another three movies. Especially the walking, it was always "...And they're walking again." |

Re: 3 Hobbit Films indignation
The Lord of the Rings is the greatest film ever made, and I will fight anyone who disagrees. So there's that. Secondly, they're not merely cutting the text of The Hobbit up into 3 films. Even as a dedicated Tolkien reader, I admit that would be foolish. However, there is a lot of other stuff going on simultaneously with the story of The Hobbit - Gandalf leaving them in parts to deal with "the Necromancer in Dol Guldur," who turns out to SPOILER SPOILER turn out to be Sauron, the White Council fighting him, Saruman starting to slip slowly from greatness to evil. There's tons of other material to work with in interstitial or prelude or postscript form, without even going into other books like The Silmarillion (which it is simply not possible to turn into a film without editing it with a machete, since it covers several thousand years of history as a chronicle rather than a single narrative). I have no concerns about this not working because Peter Jackson is working in Middle Earth again. Three more movies can't possibly be a bad thing. Oh, also, Fogger, if you want a super articulated giant spider, the Shelob figure from the Toybiz line from the Lord of the Rings films certainly fits the bill. She is unbelievably terrifying and gross.

Being able to buy giant spiders would only get me in trouble as I would likely use them to torment those I know terrified of spiders.
Man, LotR fans take in personally. I think it's that Fort Max, as a character, never meant much to me. The excessively giant TFs that could level a town Godzilla Style seemed like overkill and impractical. Devastator was my line... And again, he is a $400 brick. Yes, standing on a shelf none of them are going to do much, but at least with the better designs of today, I can pose them a little more dynamically. |

Well it's good that they're working in a lot of the concurrent material that's not explicitly in the book. I loved LotR both in book and movie form, but I've never liked The Hobbit. If these movies go over well, I can see The Silmarillion made into a movie... series. It would just have to be a bit more compartmentalized, but even just the story of Feanor vs Morgoth would be epic. And even in bite-sized chunks, yeah it would have to be edited/adapted... but that didn't stop LotR from being awesome (still not sure why we needed elves at Helm's Deep, but ).
And maybe Fogger has seen the Shelob figure and isn't satisfied. Maybe he simply can't live without an in-scale Ungoliant figure. ... I'm not sure I'd be able to sleep in the same room with one. But it's probably never happening.
