Stupid question I know, but I don't do the whole MP3 player thing...do iPods only work with iTunes? i.e. can you only upload songs using iTunes? I'm thinking of getting one for someone as a gift, but I just want to make sure. I couldn't really find a definitive answer searching the interwebs (including the Apple site).

as far as I know, the iPod only works with iTunes. iTunes is a free download for Mac or PC so it shouldn't really be an issue unless you just don't like the software.
Here's a couple random thoughts on iPods (very rambling): Using iTunes, make sure you turn OFF the setting for "Sync my iPod" or "auto update" the iPod. If this is on, everytime you connect the iPod to the computer it will automatically match the library of songs on the device to the library in your iTunes. This is bad if you don't keep the same exact list for on the go vs. at home. Then you have to try to rebuild your iPod and start all over. One thing they don't tell you is that the iPod is a one way device so you can't load songs onto it and then copy them from the iPod onto another computer or even back onto your computer. But this may be true for most mp3 devices. You don't have to buy the music from the iStore and you don't have to use the iTunes mp3 converter. I use Cleaner to convert from CD's. iTunes will handle any mp3 file from any source. Amazon's mp3 download/sales system is much better than iTunes (no file locks and limits on how many times you can move a song from place to place). I have an iPod Mini now and it's the 3rd replacement for others that have failed me for various reasons and I've been very careful with them so it's just bad parts, not hard use. I got the AppleCare extended warranty and that's how I got them replaced every time. Now that warranty is up, I'm hosed if ... when.. it fails again. I like the iPod, it's just a pain sometimes.

Thanks for the info. Looks like someone won't be getting an iPod for Christmas. Amazon MP3 is much better IMHO, too. I usually buy CDs and records, but if it's a song from a soundtrack or b-sides, then I'll buy the MP3 of it. I used iTunes in the past, but too many issues with it and then I kept getting all these wacky temporary charges on my card so I got rid of it.

Well, while I may be anti-iTunes for buying/downloading music, the hardware itself, the iPod, is probably as good as any other hardware out there. What hardware/device are you thinking about instead?

I don't know much about Sony's players. My experience with Sony is very mixed. My video camera is Grade A #1 You Love It Best, but I've had some duds too (DVDR that doesn't R, boom-box that didn't boom for long).
