There is a group for whom Hawk was the Optimus Prime of the Joes. Duke is pretty redundant when you are used to having Hawk lead from the front anyway and have Stalker heading the missions Hawk is not commanding. As with many facets of this fandom (more so, I would say, than any other group of fans), it just really has to do with how you came to relate to and understand the property. I do think that is one of the things that makes this mythos so special: It can be vastly different things to different fans depending upon their wants and needs. |

Really wish the designers would take inspiration from the last Mad Max film and make some new Dreadnoks and Dreadnok vehicles. Furiosa, Warboys, Immortan Joe, Black Mask, and the Bullet Farmer inspired designs would make for some nice Nok's. Bulletfarmers's Charger mounted on a ripsaw tank would make an awesome Nok vehicle too. So many great looking background characters and vehicles in that movie to take inspiration from.

The character I feel is the most forced is Shooter. What was just a reference to the editor in the original #1 issue in an attempt to fill out the panel has been retconned into an actual character after decades and it never felt natural to me. Now, Shooter as a character doesn't bother me,it's a great figure and could be a great character, I just wish it didn't try to tie into the original issue as an OG member of the team.
I dig hidden surprises and easter eggs that blossom into something later that are intentional, but this character (probably because I know the story of why the original panel was there) just doesn't fit in my canon.

I also hate the whole "families" thing going on with each side. After a while, if everyone is related it's not about the world picture but just about a bunch of families that are fighting each other. I dont care about that. Even worse it was "twins" in two groups of families.
*The obvious exception is Baroness uncovering that Lady Jaye was a distant relation to Destro, but even that was handled in a "it's buried in family paperwork" way that doesn't make the world seem smaller. Quote:

I don't think Duke was forced at all. As far as chain of command goes, Hawk was the officer in charge of the entire team, and then they created Duke to be more of a Top Sgt, boots-on-the-ground character. Plus, I don't think Hasbro considered Hawk a very popular character - toy wise - seeing as how they were phasing out the MMS.
So, Duke was a character that Hasbro could introduce as a mail-away figure in 83 and carded figure in 84. Jason At the end of the day, Duke's a great character on the cartoon, and there's room for him, General Hawk and Stalker too. GI Joe is a big organization. Quote:
This is probably true, but those of us who did have him and who studied the file cards (even before getting the comics) did tend to see Duke as an unnecessary clone.

I do think that is one of the things that makes this mythos so special: It can be vastly different things to different fans depending upon their wants and needs. At some point, TF Duke got broken and 1993 Battle Corps Duke became Duke, my older siblings aged out, and I started watching the cartoon, where Duke is pretty much a cranky, veteran bada**, who gets to yell at people a lot. So suddenly Duke looks cooler and yells at everyone, which makes him fun. Add to that the fact that 1993 Duke looked a lot like our real troops who I saw on the news all the time in those early post-9/11 days, and suddenly this kid didn't see Duke the same way anymore. Duke was the cool one, and Hawk was the paper pusher. And that's really still the same way I see it today, though I try to be a bit easier on Hawk than "paper pusher". This is something that I think the cartoon did much better than the comics. In the comics, everyone ties back to one specific character, sometimes even one specific event. In the cartoon, back stories can be similar (because they would be) but there's also no indication of previous friendships or relationships*. I also think it did a better job of expanding the world by giving characters individual motivations and goals, sometimes aligning with their factions, sometimes not. We see a lot more disagreements between Joes in the show, Destro has his own company that sometimes sells to Cobra, Tomax and Xamot have Extensive Enterprises, which is only affiliated with Cobra. It's great. I even think they did the "retired Joe" thing better, with Sparks only getting peripherally involved, unlike Grunt repeatedly returning to the action.
