I actually walked out of that movie. The whole "crush on your daughter's friend" was just evil. And I didn't even have kids then. If I met that character in real life today, he'd get his ass kicked!!!

Brotherhood of the Wolf
Yes, this is actually based on a true story. Now, the actual Beast of G?vaudan wasn't a captured lion, brought back to France by the main antagonist of the film, as part of a sinister cultish plot, but its true identity was never ascertained. I made a mistake in where I put this film in the timeline... it should have come before The Patriot, but I took the date from the present time of the film, which was during the French Revolution, although the majority of the film occurs in flashback form, set just after the Seven Years' War, instead. It's a fantastic film, if you're ok with French language/English subtitles. Beautifully shot and well-acted by Samuel Le Bihan, Mark Dacascos, and Vincent Cassel. It also has Monica Bellucci in one of her earlier roles, before she became more famous outside Europe.

Still fun for the scene where he gets fired from his marketing job and the drive-through bit. A lot of the cast is good too. |

Burke & Hare
Surprisingly, I don't have any films based during the Napoleonic Wars. I thought about buying Ridley Scott's Napoleon film, but that didn't get very good reviews, so I'm going to wait until it's available to stream or until he releases a Director's Cut, ala Kingdom of Heaven. In any case, we move into the 19th century, to the year 1828, where a couple of blokes in Edinburgh are digging up fresh corpses to sell to the medical school. When that business dries up, they switch to outright murdering people. Hard to believe this is based on a true story. In fact, after his execution by hanging, Burke was publicly dissected and his preserved skeleton hangs in the Edinburgh Medical School to this day. How ironic.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) I'd been curious about this one for a while, since it's a movie that people either seem to really love or really hate, but I'd never gotten around to watching it. I found a $2 ex-rental Blu-ray copy at a thrift store the other day, so I decided to finally give it a watch. Blech. What a waste. This movie is to the 1982 classic what McDonald's is to real food.

True story: My parents went to see that back in 1971 when my father was stationed in Hong Kong with the Army. Mum was expecting my older sister at the time and they had to leave partway through because Mum thought she was going into labour. Turns out it was a false alarm. Dad never let Mum live that down and he'd joke about not seeing the end of it when we were kids until he finally taped it off the TV and watched it. |

I've seen that one, but I don't own it and, unfortunately, it's not available for streaming on any platform I'm subscribed to.

Gods and Generals
Moving into the 1860s and the American Civil War, we have the nearly 5 hours long (in the extended edition) film based on the novel by Jeffrey Shaara, son of the man who wrote the novel that the sequel film, Gettysburg, was based on. This movie is a chore to sit through, if you're uninterested in American history and, if you are, why are you watching this? The timeline is set just after the assault on Fort Sumter and ends at the Battle of Chancellorsville and Stonewall Jackson's death (spoiler alert), which leads perfectly into the sequel film, Gettysburg (which actually came out 10 years earlier). As bloated as the film is, the performances are pretty fantastic, especially Stephen Lang as General Stonewall Jackson. The battles are brutal, but not horribly bloody, and a lot of the strategy meetings are fairly interesting. The dialogue can get a bit stilted, at times, as much of the story was written based on memoirs of the surviving participants and direct quotes are lifted from them, which sound weird in dialogue, as people tend to speak differently than they write. Several of the actors are reprising their roles from ten years earlier, although Tom Berenger is greatly missed, as General Longstreet. Also, General Lee's original actor, Martin Sheen, is replaced by Robert Duvall here, and he does a better job, to be honest... it's a shame they didn't use him in Gettysburg, originally. Lang was also in Gettysburg, where he portrayed General Pickett, so he gets a much meatier role this time around and makes the most of it.
