Thanks for this. When I was a kid the Athletics aaa team was in Vancouver for a bit. Vegas is the place to be. How long until NBA? It is funny, in the 90s they laughed at thought of NHL in Vegas. They had an IHL team (Thunder) and a young stud named Radek Bonk who was the next big thing; but the NHL would never make it . . . I am not a big football guy, mostly due to time constraints, but always had a soft spot for the Raiders because of Bo Jackson
Hopefully Athletics do not change their unis. Their colour way and hat are one of the best imo. Dave Stewart; Dennis Eckersley; Bob Welch let alone Rickey swiping bag after bag. These guys struck fear into Jays fans and for good reason! From what I've read, the Washington Commanders and even the Chicago Bears are considering moves outside their traditional cties but staying in the region and keeping the name. |

Nice set, Will Clark is a name I forgot about!
I did not have as much ball cards as hockey. From 80-89 had majority of opee chee and then upper deck until 92ish. Opee chee premiere was big early 90?s too. Then sold them all off. Thought I was brilliant until a few years ago lol. Cards took a hard hit for a long time. Does not seem to be the case anymore. Was not sure they were ever gonna bounce back. Good on you for hanging onto them! |

The Sacramento Kings almost moved to Vegas and then Seattle but ended up staying in Sacramento due to a last minute stadium deal. And that's the big thing driving the relocations. A lot of cities are refusing to use public funds for stadiums, so team owners are deciding if it is more valuable to keep the team where it is and pay for their own stadium or jump to someplace that will pay for one for them.
From what I've read, the Washington Commanders and even the Chicago Bears are considering moves outside their traditional cties but staying in the region and keeping the name. Ottawa built a brand new arena outside of downtown core 20 or so years ago. The area did not take off like they expected and no one wants to commute out there for games. They have been battling for years to get back near downtown now and facing similar challenges as you mentioned with regards to who is going to pay. Funny thing is, when the city pays, it is you and I who pay; even if we do not like or follow sports. Most sports teams are business right offs for the owners. They are not making money from the team themselves. More of their hobby or way to be part of the team. Calgary probably has the worse rink in NHL. They are going through exact same scenario. I toured it a few years ago. I have seen better junior rinks and dressing rooms than theirs. It is like big box stores and Walmarts when they move or shut down. What do you do with them when they are done?! No one else business wise can move into them. However, old Maple Leaf Gardens they turned into a grocery store amongst other things. |

LOL, forgot about that (not a fan of cinnamon). I had a buddy who got pulled over after a bonfire party at Davenforth beach and tried to tell the cop it was Big Red on his breath, "I ate the whole pack, bro" and not Aftershock. Not surprising, we picked him up the next morning.

Feel bad for Oakland fans with the Raiders, Warriors and A's all leaving (although the Warriors technically originally came from San Francisco, so they essentially went back to their original home, kind of like the NFL's Chargers. KC got the Royals after the A's left, but that was long enough ago and the Royals have become a prolific team in their own right since). Al Davis ruined that stadium in Oakland though when the Raiders moved back he turned into a concrete monster and then then the team couldn't get a new stadium deal to stay put. They had a couple of really nice concepts for new parks right on the water in Oakland too.
I won't lie, the stadium in Vegas that the A's are moving into in '28 looks like it will be fun to watch a game in. The scoreboard looks massive and the view out in the outfield with the New York-New York and coaster and MGM-Grand in the distance will certainly be a unique one. Man, that 1986 Topps set (regular and traded) had some good future All-Star rookie cards in it! Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco, Bobby Bonilla, Will "The Thrill" Clark, Bo Jackson, Wally "World" Joyner, John Kruk, Kevin Mitchell, Andres "Big Cat" Galarraga, Mitch "The Wild Thing" Williams, Dan Plesac, Danny Tartabull and Todd Worrell.

It reminded me of Veterans Stadium. Except the Vet had come to the end of it's life cycle 15 years prior. |

I'm waiting to hear Fred's thoughts, since I'm pretty sure he's an A's fan.

I've been to many ballparks and stadiums across all sports. Oakland A's ballpark is easily the worst venue I've ever been too. I'm not surprised the team is leaving. I don't mean to offend anyone here, but that place is a total dump. I felt like I had entered some sort of time warp it was so outdated. The bathrooms still had those trough things where you just whip it out in front of the guy next to you and piss in the same hole. Good times.
It reminded me of Veterans Stadium. Except the Vet had come to the end of it's life cycle 15 years prior. Dodger Stadium still had those up until the renovations in 2013 (they got rid of them on the field level in 2008). Nasty! Which stadiums have you been to and which were your favs? I need to experience more, I've only been to 5 (6 if you count Anaheim before and after the complete redo in the late '90s) - Chavez Ravine, the Big A (before and after), old Jack Murphy/Qualcomm, Petco and Safeco/T-Mo.

I've also been to about 11 NFL stadiums and actually have a list I keep track of to actively check off another stadium every season. My brother and I have a tradition to get to an Eagles away game every year, sometimes 2. We did the Eagles @ Rams game last year. That new stadium was pretty impressive. Crazy how the field is like in a bowl, lower than ground level. Very cool stadium. Colts was another one that is pretty rad. Place looks like a giant Costco on the outside, but pretty impressive on the inside. Eagles play in Brazil this year to start the season. We're mulling over if we can make that work. That would be an awesome trip. Last edited by DFender; 05-08-2024 at 04:17 PM.. |
