If Classified didn't exist, Joe would still be on infinite hiatus.

He's not entirely wrong, though. Maybe about the "infinite" aspect, but collectors (at least enough to sustain it <-- key point) had already failed it at TRU with the "wait for clearance" mentality, then, again, with WalMart's 4" Retro (they had to be liquidated on clearance on their site). Safe to say, ME ran its course. So "infinite," maybe not. But it'd be a loooooooong while if they hadn't done Classified. The verdict's still out on O-ring. Hasbro's attempt (outside of TF X-overs) wasn't successful and we're all eagerly waiting to see what happens now that Super7 is doing them.
Which leads me to Fred's question. I think what surprised me the most is that it took Hasbro so long to dip their feet in the water with 6" Joes. The collectible community as a whole had already shifted that direction with Marvel Legends and the Star Wars fan base (at the time), had abandoned the 3 3/4" Black series, preferring 6" scale. To me, that was the tell.

Early Classified (or iterations of at least) were designed for a while. We know from Mark Weber that the reason we didn't get it sooner is they wanted to launch it with GI Joe 3. Movies and media help make it easier to sell new skus and products to retailers so it's not surprising we got Classified with the rollout of Snake Eyes. Covid delays make that connection feel less apparent than like the D&D cartoon line coming out with the launch of the movie.

Until those last 2 waves were over produced the ME line did very well, in my store they would sell out the entire stock of figures/vehicles in 3 hours. Obviously it wasn't going to sustain Joe like Classified has but it was still successful, especially the new Scarlett.

I was surprised it existed. I had gotten into Joe when I was bout 8 years old, enjoyed it for a few years, and then it kinda went into the back of my brain. I still liked, but it just wasn't in the front of my mind. Years later, I got back into Joe through the marvel comics and found out that classified had been running for 2 years, without my knowledge. Very cool to see the brand was putting out new stuff.
