-It made the Joes on the run like they were the bad guys. That meant limited access to a base, vehicles, support, backup, etc. They were essentially the A-team. An interesting idea but that sacrificed many aspects of Gi Joe. -It wasn't episodic but felt more serial. You had to watch the previous episodes to understand what was going on. This is a more a modern take on TV shows but also makes it difficult for kids to jump in or keep up (Starblazers aside). The episodic shows of the 80s let you just tune in and jump right into an episode. It was a big deal if a cartoon ended with "to be continued" like the original five parters.

I kinda liked the thought of the Joes as the A-Team. Wish they had leaned into that even more.

The films got me interested in the franchise as a kid, but it was watching Renegades on a whim a couple of years back that convinced me to start collecting Classified as an adult. Absolutely love the show; how ironic that the movies ended it. I’d do anything for a second season.

The show was fun but didn't quite feel like Joe to me. Perhaps it was the more contained storylines that always focused on a core group or the guest spots for guys like BBQ & Snow job that never quite felt the confidence to go full on with those characters, but something lacked. Add to this the gel monster villains which never quite worked as a credible threat and the annoying version of Mindbender as an ADHD Gen-Xer, and you have a recipe for almost but not quite.
Realistically we OG collectors/fans still have the 80's ARAH cartoons to digest for nostalgic feels, but it would be nice if something modern felt like Joe. Between the movies and Renegades everything left me personally wanting. The only bright spot... Resolute. That cartoon blew my mind and I would have loved a more expanded version of that show. Perhaps move it to Netflix where the adults can watch it and/or carefully curate what they can watch with their children, and then have a more kiddie/toned down version for the ankle biters and you'd be heading somewhere. MOTU is doing it with their stuff right now and it feels like the right approach. It may not be universally accepted or loved (see retail pegs lousy with MOTU right now and quickly being ushered to clearance) but it's the right approach for Joe. The one overwhelming amazing thing from Renegades for me were Clem Sauve's character designs. Granted he was a personal friend who tragically died of cancer at the age of 33, but I felt like his designs were the right aesthetic for Joe. Unfortunately they just weren't used on the right show. |

Renegades was a brilliant concept. The A Team conceit seems a bit generic, but it was a terrific way to introduce the characters and team by starting with a tight group and building.
The real genius though was Cobra itself as a corporation hiding a global fascist movement in plain sight. That's the realest GI Joe has ever gotten and incredibly appropriate for modern times. It would be ridiculously easy for such a thing to happen in America today. Think about it: infiltrate all levels of society with commerce/consumerism and marketing/propaganda, hide a military under the guise of a private security subsidiary, infiltrate nation-states by providing "private security services" and forces, and with the way we turn a blind eye to corporate shenanigans and greed these days, you can take over the world without the status quo noticing. We're only a step away from such a thing occurring right now. i really liked this angle on it. hated that it was duke snake eyes and scarlet again. but whatever. it's actually why i picked up watching the a-team on tubi when i am able to have lunch and watch tv during the work week. |
