Nope. I think they add to the story.

Not at all. I enjoy the occasional Joe excursion into the realm of the supernatural. Cobra-La gives off a nice At the Mountains of Madness vibe.
What I hate is how the movie made these guys the progenitor of Cobra. No, no, no. Cobra Commander is not a snake man citizen, just a disillusioned American businessman who built the most fearsome international terrorist organization from scratch. Cobra-La is merely another sect Cobra allies with to achieve their ends, a la Iron Grenadiers, Dreadnoks, and Night Creepers. |

This seems to be something fans either love or hate. Personally I'm not a fan. I mean there are things I like about Cobra-La but at the same time, I much prefer Cobra Commander's comic book back story. Still I have to admit Nemesis Enforcer and Pythona are interesting designs.
I probably would have hated Cobra-La, except for the fact that I introduced my children to the animated movie and the 1987 Cobra-La three-pack sometime in 2008, and they loved it. That made it difficult for me to dislike those characters, when it brought joy to little kids. Pythona was the only character I found interesting, and I cannot for any reason get myself to accept the idea of Cobra Commander being a scientist for that civilization. When cartoon story editor and writer Buzz Dixon first came up with the idea for Cobra-La, I understand that the name was only intended as a placeholder because of the similarities to James Hilton's Shangri-La from his Lost Horizon novel. The existence of Cobra-La is problematic for several reasons. Using caves in the Himalayas such as the Hunza Valley location of Shangri-La in a Pakistani-administered territory, close to the China?Pakistan border is a real problem for the United States if they wanted to deploy G.I. Joe to the region. The ancient civilization of Cobra-La might not even be human, so it becomes a war of genocide with each side trying to annihilate the other. These blue skinned people of Cobra-La, led by Golobulus, might be recognized as gods by those practicing Hinduism, the second largest religion in Pakistan. If the United States allies of Pakistan and India both forbid any hostile actions taken against Cobra-La, the United Nations itself will be put into an awful dilemma. Cobra-La is a major headache for the G.I. Joe team.

This isn't meant to be a call out, just an observation, but I think the "do you like cobra la" threads may outnumber the "zandar/zarana" threads

Didn't like it at the time, but there was plenty of variety in the ARAH line that it didn't overly bother me as I concentrated on the stuff I did like.

I actually like Cobra La. I loved the Lovecraftian monsters and Golobulus, Pythona, and Nemesis Enforcer were great looking villains. The tone fit in right with the Sunbow cartoon, underground serpent people fits right in with Egyptian gods, Destro's ancestors Inhuman they kept in the well, an island of cloned dinosaurs, time travel, and the giant biohazard monsters that appeared in several episodes.
The only nitpicks I have about Cobra La is the horrible name Cobra La, making Cobra Commander come from it and the horrendous Cobralalala battlecry. The battlecry was an error of production though so I can't fault the writer for it as it was supposed to be a middle eastern like battlecry and not pronounced la la la. And I can't fault them for the name Cobra La either as it was a placeholder name and Hasbro execs liked it and made them keep it. The tech and idea to make Serpentor being linked to Golobulus was a great retcon though and made Serpentor more interesting to me. In a perfect world if they hadn't tied Cobra Commander directly into Cobra La I feel they could have had Serpentor split off from Cobra after the movie and GI Joe could have had 2 factions to face. Cobra led by the Commander and Cobra La led by Serpentor. Cobra would be still trying to rule the world while Cobra La kept trying to make humanity extinct or change the planets climate to be more friendly to reptile people. Have Cobra and Cobra La at odds with each other as well so you get the occasional GI Joe Cobra teamup. I just always see a ton of wasted potential in GI Joe after the movie, they could have done very interesting things with it had they not changed up to a younger audience with the DIC run. Edit: As for the Cobra La toys: Golobulus's toy was horrible, Pythona should have had a figure to put with Serpentor, and Nemesis Enforcer was too small, Royal Guard was a great fig though. I really like Nemesis Enforcers Modern figure, I hated that Pythona was a club exclusive, and I'm really sad Golobulus and Royal Guard never got a modern version. I just figure Cobra-La CC replaced the real CC at some point. That's also why the high command turned against CC, he wasn't the leader he used to be. They just didn't know that was the literal truth.
That's why World's Without End has a reality where Cobra won but not a Cobra-La thing in sight. You could argue that Flint, LJ, Footloose, Barbecue and Airtight never made back to their reality and went to one where Cobra-La existed and Cobra Commander was from there. |
