A bottom view of the replacement bottom shell for the VAMP/Stinger:
I have a 33-hour print in progress for this now. I'll post some shots of the real thing with a vintage top shell and wheels installed if it works out reasonably well.

I finally had some time to remove the supports and test-fit the VAMP/Stinger lower shell with the vintage wheels and top shell. The fit is pretty good in most respects, though I have found some significant mistakes which I will share with you all at the end of this post:
Some assembly detail shots and a few peeks into the interior spaces: I haven't pushed the wheels all of the way back onto the axles on the 3d-printed lower shell, so don't let the slight excess in axle length throw you off, but here are some comparison shots with a VAMP using a vintage bottom shell... And a few simple side-by-side shots with just the bare bottom shells alone (I intentionally haven't rounded over the wheel well flares yet, but this is where a couple of errors on my part become more obvious - see if you can catch them): Review time! Like I said, I intentionally haven't rounded off the tops of the wheel well flares yet. I also haven't tapered the side profie of the body shell behind the rear wheels (they will need to be tapered similarly to how I tapered the rocker panels between the front and rear wheels) and I knowningly haven't made cuts beneath the tail lights to indent the rear bumper area below the mounting tabs themselves. The lack of the asymmetrical portion and cable detailing on the winch is also intentional at this stage. So, those differences aren't where I screwed up. Here's where I did... Front bumper is too far forward and the (incomplete) winch frame is far too wide: You can also see in the above shot that the engine grille is too far forward, but here are a couple of shots showing how that looks with the top shell installed as well: Trailer hitch is a little too short (front to back) and is also, therefore, a little too wide at the rear-most point: Rear axle itself is probably a little too far rearward, but also so is the base of the slope of the rear of the shell itself, and to a greater degree: And finally, the foot well area needs a little a little front-to-back adjustment in a few places as well (though some of this will be rectified when I move the grille area and front bumper around): There is definite room for improvement, but for a first try as a complete bottom shell, it's not bad. More to come as the design matures...

I have corrected most of the issues with the front end now. I need to take some picture of that still, but for now here is a new render with the corrected front end, the rear-end corrections I am about to test print, and some general smoothing of the edges:

In two days I'll have a test print of the complete lower shell, minus the actual seats and some center console detailing. For now, a render of the lower shell I am test-printing:

I'm playing around with the idea of trying the full-color printing at Shapeways but I don't know how to do UV mapped textures so far and that's going to be very important if I want to have good results.
Here is my journey so far: Simple materials applied to faces on the model (hence the jagged lines in some places) - this is a rough sketch of how I think this should be painted up: An overlay of the UV map itself with residual face-based materials showing through but with the visor "painted" rather than assigned by face: First attempt at af ull UV-mapped texture: Trying out a different visor color and some light/shadow effects on the visor: I sharpened up the visor's sheen a bit and tried again: The view from the front: And a couple of renders with non-mapped materials on the add-on parts: I have some more learning to do, but once I get a complete uv-mapped texture that I think is good enough I think I might just buy a full-color test print and see how it turns out in the real world.

Those are so awesome! What scale are those going to be? There you go inspiring me again. I’ve got a lot more YouTube to watch and so much to learn on the topic of hard surface modeling.

Hopefully by the time I'm finished I'll be able to print a full-color, paint-free version of this armor set:
