I was really disappointed in the art. I thought Atkins was a better artist than this. I had high hopes with Atkins coming back. Maybe I was wrong but I remember when he did the new Joe series the art was for detailed. This was cartoony and amateurish. I've read GI Joe since #2. These stories are long, drawn out and boring. Lets have a roll call panel of joes and then show Snale Eyes or some other Ninja take out dozens of Cobras. It's the same thing over and over. The original run you could look at the cover and say this happened this issue. Every since Snake Eyes was killed this comic has not been good. Just do some one shots or 2-3 issue arcs. I'll never stop reading this comic but it's not very good anymore.

Totally agree about Mushynskys inks. Inkers do matter. But the action is boring as well. I did like Atkins on the other Joe comic. I'm not sure the inker on that. These new issues have been subpar and the last one the worst. I don't need to see the joes driving everywhere. If you were a fan of GI Joe back in the day. It's like the 80s sci fi movie "METALSTORM: THE DESTRUCTION OF JARED-SYN". Literally more than half the movie is the main guy driving this really shitty custom vehicle with no dialog.

I can almost bet that this current arc will come to an unceremonious and flat end. The Joes will come to a draw with COBRA and give them a pass if they can just have Sean back. And all of the loose ends will peter out (re: The Oktober Guard). My expectations for every new issue are lower and lower. Makes me sad as this lore has been very close to me for over 35 years. Thinking back on the classic Marvel run, I can pretty much tell you every issue’s cover, title, plot, art team, etc. Couldn’t do that with the current run. Maybe it’s just seeing things through the eyes of my childhood, or maybe it’s just not that good anymore. Maybe it’s time for the Joes to actually defeat COBRA. There would still be plenty of stories left to tell. I always thought it would be awesome to flesh out storylines from the classic years. Take the Battle of Springfield in issues 49-50. We pretty much saw the fighting primarily just between Stalker’s team and Serpentor and also the diversion by COBRA at the airport. I’d love to see other aspects of the action between the other characters on both sides. Combat skirmishes between Eels Special Forces and Duke’s Security Team, Wild-Bill and Airborne providing close air support in the Dragonfly, etc. I’d much rather read a ten issue arc on that than watch Sean effortlessly and continually now down ranks of every Viper class. Just my thoughts as a loyal and frustrated fan... |

While I enjoy the stories more than many here, I do hear what you're saying. I do think ARAH could benefit from new blood. What if someone else wrote it and Larry become the editor?!? Keeping his name attached to it *somehow* is important I think. At the very least it would be nice if the editor had an active role in planning out arcs with Larry and three acts were plotted out in advance rather than Larry's page-to-page writing style that doesn't seem to excite many people these days...

I can't stand his page to page writing style. I'm not sure it's really true. If it is, it's crap. The current arc is 12 issues. So you're writing to fill pages and not based on the story. I would be a fan of shorter arcs with a Joe here or there getting killed. His worst issue was 108. It was lazy. Just get rid of some guys. If every now and then a guy died it would make the stories more meaningful. I feel like the current stories are written for kids. And it didn't feel that way in the original run. Hama has and some good ideas. I liked how they brought back Dr. Venom. I liked the Red Shadows although they were under used. That Horrorshow is a robot maybe interesting. Too much "roll call" issues. If your just going to name drop an old character and show him doing nothing don't do it.

I don't know how many Hamaverse characters there are, but I think the only possible way to get them all into a ten issue arc is for most of them to only be seen in the background. I would be completely fine if the team was pared back to those that appeared in first ~50 issues. Introduce new bad guys, but keep the good guys a small team.
In the original run we were kids, so I don't think the writing has changed all that much *but* I do agree that fresh ideas and well thought out stories would be welcome. Last edited by stopdead; 08-07-2020 at 06:54 PM.. |
