I was born in 84. Got my first Joe as a present for my 5th birthday in 1989, but didn’t realize there were more until I saw arctic Stalker in early 1990. Saw the line conspicuously decline, then switch to Savage, then to Extreme, then to nothing, all in years I would have still been buying.
Other than the end of the line in 94, my biggest gripes were thumbs, crotches, and the transition from distinct accessories to generic trees and missile launchers. I generally preferred the older designs I could see in the comics (my first was Counting Coup, the reece mission over Benzheen by ol’ what’s-his-name in the stealth fighter) and the scattered Sunbow cartoons that Blockbuster still had, but I liked some neon figures on a case by case basis. I loved the way the different media told different stories because that meant you learned more about the world and got more options to draw inspiration from, but I hated how much of the toyline, toon, and comic I’d missed out on, and the seeming impossibly of everything fixing that. But it’s the specifics that are probably more fun to talk about: * Charbroil’s exposed neck * the slightly oversized chest plate on CGI, somewhat marring a great figure * whatever the hell Tracker was wearing * 90s Grunt’s headsculpt * every attempt to add action features to figures — ninja chops, talking ‘packs etc * never finding Laser Viper * the total absence of female figures until 93, although I get a Hasbro Direct Jinx * seriously, no Baroness v2? no Lady Jaye v2? * that ‘92/93 Roadblock didn’t have a big machine gun (other than recall version) * the limited articulation Star Brigade guys, particularly Rock & Roll for some reason * the total absence of blueshirts or basic Vipers in the early 90s * that nobody had the Chocolate Chip camo I saw on tv in DS/DS * that they never made a Billy or Cool Breeze figure in the day * that 92 Firefly was an odd green and not in awesome camo * the lazy sculpt of Heat Viper v2 and the knock-kneed, pinheaded sculpt of Nitro Viper * paper stickers * Chuckles and Wild Bill v2, though I now enjoy them * Cobra La |

Well, to add to my list of gripes, I really hated it when the figure didn't look like the way he looked in the comics or cartoon.
I hated it when either of those media showed the character with the helmet off but the toy had a non-removable helmet. The one that annoyed me the most was Lady Jaye as she never used the cap in the cartoon. I hated that Dusty's filename in the toy war Ronald Tadur but they called him Ronald Rudat in the cartoon...liked the name Rudat way better. I now realize why they did that, but as a kid, I didn't know. I hate how the Twins were reversed in the toys compared to both the cartoon and comics. I hate how that continued on even to the modern era figures. I commented earlier about how I hated that the Canadian USS Flagg had Canada flags on it. That annoyed me for all the Joe vehicles, not just the Flagg. This one is an odd one, but because of G.I.Joe, I really hated French, because I blamed the fact that French was required on all the packaging, we lost out on a lot of the filecard details. On US cards, there were 3 sections: 1. File Name and the military specialties 2. The main filecard text describing the character's past or any interesting history or training 3. Present stuff related to the character as a closing statement. In Canada, most of the filecards were missing section 2. For example, if you compare the Canadian Ace filecard to the US one, the whole section about him rather flying than doing anything else is ommitted. You only get the last section which talks about his major flaw that he was a gambler. Don't know why this annoyed me so much as a kid, but then again, I'm one of those weird guys who would read instruction manuals from cover to cover, so when I realized I was getting less information than what the US kids got on their Joe filecards, it annoyed me. Then I blamed it on the French language laws of Canada...haha. Oh, and another really annoying thing was when Serpentor started going Cobra Lalalalala

I got in at the beginning. I disliked things that stretched my suspension of disbelief to far. A vtol a-10 with a tail gunner? I would have killed for an a-10. (Thank you pte)
Why was an air force captain flying a navy plane? And how was the vtol a-10 going to dogfight a tomcat? Had I not been out by that time I would have had a stroke seeing the buzz boaror Havoc. And you're trying to tell me the little prop at the back of the condor provides enough lift? I also hated Ted. Ted's parents bought him all the figures and vehicles. There are still figures I have a diminished opinion of because Ted had them and I didn't. (Recondo and Ripcord really stick out). I wasn't happy it took teo years to get a Baroness when she was thr one who got things done for Cobra. And we never got a vintage Dr. Venom, scarface or Kwinn. Didn't care for Zartsn or the Dreadnoks. A biker gang on a battlefield? "OH No! That guy has a blowtorch! RUN! ....Or we could cut him down at 200 yards with our rifles.". I hated that the HQ playset was above ground. The pit in the comic was better and made more sense for a secret facility. Though it also bothered me that in the map for the pit they included an ICBM. Why does an anti terror task force need nukes? |

Forgot about the Rattler. I loved it but it annoyed me that the rear gunner could shoot off the tail fin.
I completely forgot about the Skystriker. I hated that the landing gear was tied to the wings. It took up too much room with the landing gears down. I also hated that it was called XP 14F instead of F14. I understand why now but didn't understand it as a kid.

I forgot:
Used to hate when they'd do a new version of a figure in a role that limited numbers of people anyway. EG: Battlecopter Ace. Why didn't we get a new helicopter pilot? I never saw the multiple commo guys as one replacing the other, I saw it as like the real military that there's lots of guys doing one job. |

That I “got too old for toys” around the time the Night Raven & Terror Drome came out.
1. I loved the Dreadnoks, I didn’t like that they didn’t get motorcycles. 2. I always felt like there needed to be a Dreadnok Water Moccasin with the color change feature. Sort of an upgrade for Zartan. 3. Zandar & Zarana would have been better as a 2 pack like the Crimson Twins. 4. The first HISS tank coupola had the occupants sitting to high & exposed. 5. That the armaments weren’t always compatible. The missile mounting points weren’t the same on all of the vehicles. 6. The gun on the APC felt like an afterthought. 7. The AWE Striker was neat but unnecessary. The same with the SkyHawk & Silver Mirrage. 8. The Devilfish needed a trailer. 9. The A.S.P. was cool, it just needed a better canopy. 10. The little sled on the WHALE should have been omitted & the space for the bike should have been big enough for a RAM. 11. PackRats didn’t pack or unpack. I remember when I saw Storm Shadow version 2 in 1988, I simply didn't care - spent my allowance on him and he remains my favorite figure! |

I love the street fighter figures, it just never made sense for them to be branded GI Joe.

I hated the head sculpts on most 1987 figures not because they were based on a few Hasbro employees but because some of the heads were chubby such as Sneak Peak and Law.
